Black Friday and Cybermonday/week .... does that make you go ..

Hi
just want to get a better feel for this. Did you go to your favourite dealer last Black Friday .... or perused the Internet a little more looking for bikes or parts on the so called Cyber Monday ....

What irks me is that Black Friday nowadays starts on Thanksgiving day afternoon .. and Cyber Monday is all of the sudden called Cyberweek ... go figure ...

But all that hoopla aside did this make you look for a good deal ....( Bicycle related )

-------------

Its super tough in the bike industry to get any traction with this, we cannot built a bike which is oversimplified and barely works ...like those 199 dlr 42 inch flat screen tvs which are purposly built for the sale and are usually the cheapest stuff u can find ...

--------------
https://www.thorusa.com/dahon/current/vitessed7.htm
we do have a "until they are gone " special for the Vitesse... its 150 dlr off regular price, would that qualify ?

In our shop, even with amazing weather, our black Friday wasn't all that. Part of that is selling bikes in New England after the main riding season is over for many customers. But nothing you'd call a rush. Even with all kinds of marketed specials going down. Might be just our region, but black Friday is nowhere near our biggest day.

Oh yeah, it'd be like trying to sell barbeques in December. No matter how much they're discounted people aren't interested.

The only bike sales you're going to see in the pre-Christmas / Thanksgiving rush are kids bikes as presents. After that the main seasonal sales start when the weather warms up.

I did get a postcard from my LBS that they we're having a black friday sale on bikes. I did get an itch to go, but since it's located in a shopping center next to Best buy and other big box stores, I didn't want to deal with the masses.

I bought a suspension fork on the weekend from Speedgoat because they were offering 20% off and free shipping [in the US].

i bought a ton of stuff online Monday and Tuesday, i knew there would be good deals, and i took advantage of that. stocked up on consumables, got some nice tires and chains which will last me through the season. i'm mainly a roadie, and i like to ride the best clincher tires out there, vittoria open corsas or veloflex corsas, usually very pricey, but catch a good sale, and they are easily affordable. chains and tubes - i like to have a stock of them for when i need them, it just makes good sense to buy them on sale.

I tweeted Bike Friday > Black Friday

I looked at a lot of email ads, but only bought non-bike related stuff Black Friday - Cyber Monday.

I very recently bought a messenger bag on-line and should have waited because I would have saved 5% if I'd placed the order last Friday.

Heh Thor,

I did some pre-Black Friday sales a few days before in Arizona and bought the stuff I need for my bikes. A friend of mine bought a nice carbon bike from Performance for the Black Friday price (they put that price tag up by mistake!). Unfortunately, the bike I really want, hint hint Tern, from your store are usually not on sale.
Other than that, I got a Kobo ereader on Cyber Monday.

Still debating between Tern Verge Eclipse 9 or the Verge X30h. Will you have the Verge X30h in stock in the near future?

Thanks!

Nope. I spent all I'm willing to spend this month on the new Bike Friday. Last thing I bought was a pair of grips for my hybrid, since I foolishly cut too much off the original ones to fit bar ends on there when I first got the bike. I may have small hands, but 2" of grip is just not enough to be comfortable.

Bikes: 2 - 2007 Custom Bike Fridays, 2 - 2009 Bike Friday Pocket 8's, Gravity 29'er SS, 2 - 8-spd Windsor City Bikes, 1973 Raleigh 20 & a 1964 Schwinn Tiger

Have been out here on the WA Central coast for the last week. Hardly any place to shop out here anytime, let alone any opening early Black Friday stores. Would have gone to local Christmas Craft Fair, but wife had a cold. Only shopping here has been at local ACE Hardware store to get stuff to organize our new shed - where the Pocket 8's are now stored.

Seems that most of the bikes bought this time of the year are for kids.

By the way, we usually do observe 'Buy Nothing Day'.

Disclaimer: Several years ago I did buy my Pocket 8 during Bike Friday's Black Friday Sale - it was well worth the effort and outlay.

Lou

Bikes: Dahon Boardwalk for me and a Citizen Gothic for my daughter

I did a ton on online shopping on Black Friday. Then, I headed over to 2 LBS's. One store was closed. The other was open and having a huge sale. I wanted to buy a hybrid bike that was 25% off but ended up test riding road bikes that were 3x my budget. I didn't order a bike because I had enough money for a $700 bike, but I did not have enough for a $2250 bike. However, I will go back to the LBS after Christmas to pick up the bike. So, while I did not spend money at the LBS on the actual day of Black Friday, I am going to go back and spend 3x the amount I was originally going to spend with that LBS. BTW, I only went because a) I figured the bike shop would be empty on Black Friday, esp since it's getting colder (I was right) b) the LBS is not near major retailers so I didn't have to deal with traffic/parking etc

Just want to add that I did go looking for specific bike related deals online and in-store during Black Friday.

I think a lot of people would be very happy to buy the equivalent of Dahon's chinese domestic products - a rash of folders with 1-6 speeds for under $100. I have several of these, the quality is not bad. There is a 2 year warranty in china.

What are the barriers to that happening? Walmart can sell the "junk" $40 bike which is equivalent to the $20 Chinese full size bike (even at Walmart in China) - so it's not an issue of logistics/shipping.

I wouldnt feel comfortable to sell most of the chines domestic models over here, despite the obvoius dollar savings...
Dahon would loose brandrecognition due to inferieur product ....
Freight for even a big manufacturer in the folding field like Dahon is probabnly 100 times as expensive than Walmart ,.... who basically OWN the container ships ..lol

Plus.... dealers usually work on a percentage .... You think you can pay the workers, keep the lights ( and heater) going, pay the warehouse space, the interest, take the bike out of the box, check it, put it together, than repack it and send it for free ... for 10 bucks a bike ? Doesnt work ... ( ask me how I know, lol )
