Ergon grips and shifter??

I'm loving my Xootr! I ride it all the time.

I'm thinking about putting some Ergon grips on the bike (see here: http://www.ergon-bike.com/). I really like them—their look and how they feel—but I was wondering: how do the grips interact with the shifter? How does that work?

Here's a Xootr with Ergon shifters: http://www.xootr.com/gallery_swift-f...Customizations

Thanks in advance.

So far, the only modification I've made to my bike is adding Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires.

there are several sizes of Ergons. they make one set where the right-hand shifter is short, so it fits next to the grip shifter. I can't remember the model number but they are available all over. I had them on my Swift before I switched to drop bars, and they were fabulous

Here's a component question. What are the correct shifters to use if I want to convert my Swift to a flat bar road bike set up? I have Ultegra 9sp derailers ft & rr, a compact double crank set, and I need to get the front derailer mount from Xootr. I have brifters too, but don't want to do a drop bar, so what are my options for trigger shifters? In my searches, I have come up with shimano Sl-R440's and thats about it. Will these R440's work with my 9sp set up? I assume the rear drop outs will accomodate the 9spd cog set, is that a bad assumption?
Any help will be appreciated.

I got a set of sun race friction thumb shifters for under $20 currently. There great! For the cost it worth trying them. Before that, i was using xt trigger shifters/ ultergra medium cage. I personally had trouble with the 9 sp index shifters keeping all the gears working.

jur 07-08-11 11:39 PM

You can use any Shimano flat bar shifters such as XT with the derailers, I do that as they are compatible. I am not sure what the current 'dropout" width in the rear is, but I use 130mm road hubs with my 135mm Swift. I use a 1.5mm spcer wasger each side and just torque the rest. Bascally you can do anything you want. Just the compact crank set may be a bit low geared.

Hi every one! iv been working my way through this massive thread for a little while now
I have only got to page 16 and am now the proud owner of a brand new single speed black swift!
I just wanted to say a big thanks for every ones opinions, advice and tips.
to anyone in the u.k trying to find a u.k supplier, I got in touch with a guy that sells xootr scooters and he managed to get me mine really quick with no hassle and was very helpfull (I don't no if Im aloud to put down his web site on here?)

As its going to take me weeks to get through this 111 page! Thread, so I don't no if it's been discussed about but has anyone tried using a sturmey archer s2c Hub on there swift or on any bike.
I was thinking of getting rid of all cables and any other clutter to make a really clean uncluttered swift with the s2c gears and back pedal brake. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

jur 07-11-11 05:11 PM

Yep you will have no problems with that setup. You might want to use tug-nuts to prevent the axle slipping forwards on the right side.

Paul Braithwait 07-11-11 05:14 PM

Welcome! Nice to know there is a fellow Swifter here in the UK. There is no problem about putting web site links on the forum (good wholesome ones only) and it will be useful to know who imports the Swift into the UK these days. Enjoy your riding - and reading!

bendembroski 07-12-11 12:38 AM

There are a few Swifters here in the UK & I'm sure they would welcome a link for a dealer that might be willing to order in parts and bikes.

Welcome to the fold!

Hello (from another UK-based swifter) - please do tell us about the supplier (is it scoot UK?). Just this morning I got an email from a friend asking "what folding bike should I get" as his Kansi has just been recalled (the frames are failing). He's buying through cyclescheme so needs to buy through a proper dealer - therefore I can't recommend the Swift to him as I don't know of any dealers any more. Someone one my train just got themselves a swift off ebay in fantastic condition.

s2c sounds like a great idea - I'd do that myself if I was just commuting on it and not training. There's a lot to be said for simplification and getting rid of cables.

ginojames 07-12-11 03:28 AM

Brilliant! I think i will get a s2c ordered up and give it a go

its www.scootuk.com that I got it from, Andy from scootuk was really helpful

nish2575 07-12-11 08:14 AM

related to s2c, i wanted to try s3x with cabling only to main tube, and a shifter on the maintube. but i need 186% range at least, the s3x is something like 160% range

also, you might want to look at moulton tsr2 for any inspiration on how to do your mod

ginojames 07-12-11 11:23 AM

Oops it's www.skootuk.com, my mistake!

ginojames 07-12-11 03:46 PM

The sx3 looks like a great hub, should go well on the swift!

Just checked out that moulton tsr2 and read a lot of reviews on the s2c hub that's on it, thanks nish2575

ginojames 07-15-11 06:41 AM

Ok all ordered up after a lot of uming and talking to my local bike shop about fitting the hub

The main thing I was worrying about was the axel length on the s2c as it 162mm, so it would only leave 7mm either side to get a lock nut on, the guy at the shop insured me it will be ok.....

I will post some pics when I'm finished

At last, I was able to get out for a short ride today after over a month of not cycling because of work and decorating! These are a few shots to show how Dahon 20" mudguards look on a Swift. They fit easily and without any modifications required. I haven't tried them in the wet but they appear to give good protaction. Made by SKS they are a quality product and do not affect the fold of the Swift.

i'm curious to see if it comes loose frequently from folding. my planet bike one used to come loose about 1/month

bendembroski 07-21-11 01:52 AM

Mine did too. Nothing a little loctite couldn't fix though.

Swift with Sturmey 5-speed

3 Attachment(s)
Hello,

Been meaning to post for a while, but was never the right time at the computer!

Just wanted to share in response to some recent questions about gearing. I've been riding with a 5-speed Sturmey for a couple months now, and it's great. I had issues with top speed on the standard setup, which some posters have discussed recently, and it's really sorted it out. I was usually riding in 7th gear on the standard derailleur and wanted more headroom. I was also having issues with the chain rubbing when in 8th gear, and the lower part of the derailleur caught something on the curb once and threw the chain. Painful. Opted against just getting a larger chainring & decided to ditch the derailleur altogether.

I ride with a 55T chainring and a 13T sprocket. I find this ratio very close to 7th on the standard setup, though I think 56-13 is technically closer. With the SRF-5, direct drive's on center, so I wanted 3rd gear to be my normal riding gear. It works really well. 2nd gear is for starts, 3rd for general riding, and 4th for when the road's more open. I get into 5th occasionally on big hills, but in London it's not long before there's a light or something to stop you (yes I stop at red lights :thumb:). I don't think I'll ever drop to 1st unless there's a vertical wall in front of me.

In hindsight I probably would have gotten a 3-speed for the little amount I get up to 5th gear, but then again it's nice to have. Having always had 8 speeds before I couldn't commit to just 3 gears! I don't think I'll ever go back to derailluers again, especially on small wheels. I looked at the Capreo system, but it seemed too fiddly & speciallzed. The Sturmey's ended a lot of hassle that extended back into my Dahon days before I got my Swift this year.

Here's a pic:
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211651

Yes, that's a spraycan job! I got a little paranoid about how shiny it looked. Got some Wellgo QR's as well so I can take the seatpost and pedals away when I lock the bike up.

You can see here the stock chainguard still kinda covers the chain at 55T:
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211653

And I posted a while back about folding handlebars. You can see from my home storage why it would be handy!
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=211652

I've gotten used to hanging up the handlebars now, so I don't think I'll bother. The downward-angled stem helps hook it on things, too. I'm 6'2" and had no problem with the XL size's seatpost, but I needed to get the handlebars higher and a little closer. I like to ride more upright for my back's sake.

I bought my bike from Flow Berlin for less than SkootUK are selling it for, including shipping (that seemed to be a similar problem for foldingbikes.co.uk?). Their website's a little Germanic in the Enlgish translations, but email with them was always good, and delivery was . . . swift :p

Michael

P.S. I wouldn't recommend Bikefix in London for any service work. Their workshop first-come-first-serve policy is a pain (when they've ordered the wrong part, thus delaying your work, you still can't take your number in the queue until your part's come in-which I had to call to find out if it arrived). And when they fit a 54T-14T instead of what you ordered because they ordered the wrong part (again) - and they DON'T call you to check first, that's as we say in the UK "well dodgy". I wasn't very excited about my new gearing when I arrived and the guy said "I've made a modification to your setup which I think you'll like". The upshot is I learned how to refit it all myself. Expensive lesson..

Can not really justify why but here is a pic of my swift and myself. It took a couple of hours getting to the top from Luz. I would have preferred to have slightly lower gearing but maybe next time.

Anyone know of a chain tug/tensioner that'll work with the swift's dropouts?

Almost any chain tug will work, so long as it is designed for 3/8" (10mm) axles. I've used both of these:

I have a silver redline chain tensioner that worked (sold the bike) perfectly with my swift.

I am thinking of getting a Swift as my do it all bike. What is the widest tires that will fit on the bike? Thanks. Sorry this has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find it.

jur 08-01-11 01:21 AM

I think you can safely put on a Big Apple 2.15" (Is that the biggest size?). Certainly there is enough clearance in the fork; the rear triangle may be a bit smaller, will have to check.

bendembroski 08-01-11 01:56 AM

The 50mm Big Apple was a tight fit on the rear of my swift. I managed to squeeze a 60mm on the front. Just.

andyh2 08-01-11 04:21 AM

Paul, what tyres are you running there with the dahon mudguards?
