Brompton Brakes

Hi Guys

For the past two months, my breaks have gone really bad ! When I first got the Brompton I remember thinking to myself 'Wow, the breaks are amazing' but now I have to take into account a 10 to 20 meter distance before I come to a full stop.

So I looked at the breaks, and it turns out my back wheel breaks have totally come off, even the screw !! Don't ask, I have no idea how.

Can anyone link me to some high quality breaks, with screws and metal bit please ?

Thank You.

You broke your Brompton? It is brakes to stop and breaks when you have broken something Roger.

Take it to a local bicycle shop. It looks like it should be fairly easy and inexpensive to fix. I estimate it would cost ~$25 at our shop ($16 for Brompton parts and $9 for installation and adjustment). It might be less at your local shop. Most important, the local shop should be able to inspect the bike and confirm whether there are other issues that need to be addressed.

buy new pad inserts, a common Shimano type, have the bike shop do the work,
since they have mechanical aptitude, where the OP just can take pictures of things.

Different skills and tools.

they only come out if you put the brake shoe in backwards,
so it may be safer if you let someone else do the work.

And you'll be ready to fix it yourself. Best of luck.

Can imagine a lot of stress on the breaks, sorry, brakes in Huddersfield - lotta hills, lotta stopping. Not along the canal though, for some reason, the towpath is always pretty flat.

But here in South Manchester, everywhere is flat, so our brakes last longer. And some of us spell better than others. But we are united as members of the fold, right ? I mean, them's the breaks.

I fit Kool Stop's continental brake shoes on my Mk2 Brompton..
the pad is molded with a bolt sticking out the back
you put a washer and nut on, to mount it , so there is no backwards,
and no squirting out the brake shoe out of the holder if you are not paying attention
and putting it on wrong way around.

Please (everyone), do an M-check on your bicycle regularly. No bike should get into this state unseen. You could die!

https://www.doitbycycle.com/maintenance/bikecheck.aspx

Original poster: stop riding your bike until you sort it out. And you need to learn some basic bicycle maintenance. Evans Cycles runs maintenance courses to help you learn the fundamentals. There is one TONIGHT, if you can book online and get to Leeds (use a bus or car, NOT your bike) at 5pm. They'll be able to show you what to do to keep your bike safe, and possibly even help you fix your current problem.

Be happy that this happened to the rear brake since it is far far far less important than the front brake.

You might consider doing some simple reading about caliper brakes. I always recommend Sheldon ...

https://sheldonbrown.com/calipers.html

Modern caliper brakes, IMO, are pretty easy to adjust. There are some simple ways to get the pads toed in appropriately.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, managed to do it myself with no major issues. When I first fitted them, they grasped the wheel, so wheel wouldn't move freely, so I loosened the little screw at the base of the brake handle, and now all is good.
