Just had a look at the Vulture flickr site, there are truly gorgeous TIG welds.

The single S&S coupling is a great idea - far stronger than the small lip and single clamp ring used on the Ritchey Breakaway bikes, which also use a seatpost clamp to hold the top together.

I've really enjoyed this thread. I'm going to throw this one in the mix for good measure. However, I still think the first one you posted was my favorite of these. Although, the Vulture is also jaw-dropping.

I clicked on the link provided and didn't find any more info about this bike.

Note that it has two rear derailleurs and two cassettes. It looks like that's used so the stoker and captain don't have to agree on a gear (although I want more pictures/descriptions!!!).

By the way, I was wrong. The two cassettes aren't so stoker/captain have different gearing, but rather the bike has 54 (as in fifty four) gears!!

Definitely some outside-the-box thinking here.

Got my 2-speed automatix build from respect cycles yesterday. I had read some forum posts from Bruce over the last year and got increasingly interested in this hub.

The bike is awesome. It has a 44:18 direct drive and increases by 137%, essentially making it like a 44:13. I had spoken to the company over email and they were nice enough to swap out white saddle and white grip tape on my all black urban velo with the 2-speed SRAM Automatix. They also threw in extra tubes... great because 20" long stem presta tubes can be hard to locate!

Nice choices!! Excellent price for a bike with that hub installed already tuned .. when you're ready, spring for a an inexpensive 16t and try that, you'll like the speed increase .. btw, what tires are on your bike?

That caliper makes me all tingly in the no-no parts.

1.35" up to 100psi. rides smooth, a 16t might be too fast :D. Thanks for providing so much info about the hub on the web.

bridgestone picnica redesigned:

within a somewhat narrow context, this is one of the more amazing bikes i've seen. the maker at rat engineering saw the inherent quality in this design and fabricated what is effectively a "picnica 5.0" from scratch. minimally redesigned, the U channel headtube brace is replaced by a elegant tube. the bulky and heavy cast alloy bottom bracket/lug is also gone. a very cool cantilevered stem (he did have an alternate version with internal cable routing). a lefty front fork. the original spring-loaded collapsing seatstay is redesigned and incorporates a quick release. the weighty hi-ten steel is replaced by cromo. and amazingly he fabricated his own rear caliper brake. although he never mentions the final weight of the new bike, i would hazard a guess at around 8-9kg for the final build. gorgeous. if this ever went into production, i would certainly buy one.

The "picnica 5.0" definitely looks interesting, but I wonder why they don't show any pictures of it "folded"?

in it's folded position, the front wheel and stem assembly of the picnica flops to one side and makes handling awkward. also, there is no clip or locking mechanism to hold the fold together. a possible solution would be a folding handlebar that would capture the frame tubes and hold the front wheel upright and prevent pivoting. it would have the added benefit of enabling a more narrow and compact profile. some type of clasp or strap would thread through the back wheel and hold the fold tightly together.

interestingly, the problem wasn't ignored by bridgestone, in fact, they did produce something similar to the above in one iteration of the picnica (the DX i think). the twiddly knob releases the handlebars and pivots on the stem:

This looks like it's a retractarble maintube fold like the gitex. The gietex should had a square maintube to keep torsonial flex to minimum, looks like this model got this aspect of the design correct if this is the case.

you're right, bhyke. that's exactly how it functions. even better than a simple square tube, this bike has a center cut-out or channel to maintain perfect registration. would love to get my hands on one of these. i can't find anything about this bike.
