dahon silvertrip

hi guys i got offer from LBS dahon silvertrip they give for around $ 600, is this price worth it?

gilaasepeda 03-14-14 10:16 AM

also after read this blog site http://handsonbike.blogspot.com/2013...ahon-tern.html, it say we cant upgrade triple crank on folding is this true?

thugpipe 03-14-14 03:27 PM

Are you saying your local shop is selling a silvertip for $600US? Is it used?

I think that might be fair depending on its condition, my silvertip cost $770US new 2 years ago.

The site you linked to was talking about a very different bike, on a midtown mini frame like the Silvertip you could deffinitly put a tripple crank on it. One advantage of the silvertip is that you can upgrade it with almost any normal bike parts.

sorry it is $500 USD is brand new old stock but have slightly scratch, other than that is all good. i planing to upgrading to 30 speed ..... can we use brifter road with v brake? i found it, is harder to adjust it?

That sounds like a great deal, the silvertip is a great bike! check out this thread which has a bunch of mods to midtown mini frame bikes:

http://www.bikeforums.net/folding-bi...head-voll.html

one guy in that thread put drop bars and brifters on a smoothhound with v-brakes and used a device called a Problem Solver's Travel Agent to compensate for the short pull of the brifters so you may want to look into getting those. you could also change the brakes to cantis or calipers if you like. The bigger issue is the fold with drop bars, the bike uses a NVO stem system to allow the rider to remove or reorient the stem/bars when folding the bike and not change the headset adjustment. this stem is important to the fold, if you are getting the folding version of the bike, and this stem has a clamping area of 25.4mm so you either have to replace the stem system with a normal threadless stem and spacers, find a set of drop bars with a 25.4mm clamping area, or find a new NVO stem with a 31.8mm clamp.

I have a Smooth Hound which share similar frame with Silvertip. I am using road lever and cantilever for the front, v-brake with Travel Agent for the rear. A properly adjusted cantilever brake will feel better with road lever than v-brake with Travel Agent.
Adjusting v-brake with Travel Agent is no harder than regular v-brake, there are two types of Travel Agent, one with barrel adjuster and one without. Get one with barrel adjuster.

I guess the only unique part in Dahon midtown frame is the width of fronthub (74mm), the rest is standard road bike parts.

Nice, enjoy its a great bike.

Did you start tearing it down or is that how you got it? What are you planing to build it up with?

logical answer is to change the bullhorn to drop bars. part of the functionality of the hooded brifters is to provide an additional hand position.

That's the same setup as my Speed Pro TT:

Works just fine for me. The brakes are actually a bit easier to use than from the hoods of a drop bar.

Yea you simple have to use some zip ties to make the cables look ok but they are going to hang out there a bit, I had the same issue on my bike with a similar set up its really not a problem. I would also shift the brifters further out on the bars to maximise your lever pull length especially if you are using V-brakes.

Please elaborate, too small how? Is the smallest ring hitting the frame, is the gearing too low(with no chain i cant see that as a problem yet), is the front derailleur too high or not correct?
