Well I had pulled the trigger on another Eclipse model last year, I cancelled it after finding out I couldn't move any of my IGH related gear over to it. So glad I waited as these new UNO models have the eccentric bottom bracket, etc. Makes it perfect for what I want to build.

My end goal is to have something like this:

However, mine will have a Alfine 11 drive train with the versa shifters on dropbars. Among lots of other little things. I'm curious if any other Eclipse owners have placed drops on theirs? Not much out there on the interwebs on this topic.

The experience of myself and my compadres is that cool folding bikes are well down the list of things that attract young women. Still, you should never let a nay-sayer dissuade you from your dream, and if all else fails, you'll still have a really nifty folding bike.

LOL at tcs, was wondering what the heck were you talking about but yeah it's a very nifty bike for a single speed. Also I like that it's basically an open canvas that Tern setup to let you do ANY mod you'd like for it. It's a very nice project platform.

and RayB we all expect a full review on what do you think of it out of the box. And where you able to attract any females with it on the first ride?

haha, ya. unfortunately wifey may have something to say about that if anything arrived on the doorstep along with the bike . The "open" platform is why I went with it. I'm not at all into single speeds myself but of course this lends itself perfectly to an alfine build. benefit of ordering the single speed though is if you want to build it up with decent parts your not paying for a bunch of low end crap just to get the frame. Plus being a folder built around the 24" wheels is perfect for me given my height. I will certainly post some opinions once it arrives.

Regarding the drop bars... Since the VRO stem is considerably wider than standard stems, you'll need to find a drop bar that can safely be used with that system. I know they're out there, but the exact models don't come to mind. Perhaps check in with Syntace or Tern for recommendations.

If you're doing a ground up build with new wheels, you could also consider going 26" (559) since the disc brakes don't limit that. You'll be more limited in tire width than the 24" wheel option, but it opens up more tire options as a whole (and rim too if doing a full wheel build).

Can't help with drop bars on the Eclipse, but have done a Versa conversion. Spec sheet says the bike comes with Avid BB3 brakes. This must be a new model because previous low end Avid mech disc calipers were bb5. Unless they've made the bb3 more compatible with brake/shifter short pull brake levers, I'd def recommend upgrading the brake calipers, to TRP Spyre or HyRd units. Avid road mechanicals are notoriously difficult to set up correctly -- without annoying rubbing and with reasonable engagement point at the levers.

Oh no, not keeping the bb3 on there. I already have versa, alfine and bb7 on another build that I'm moving to this one.

for the US friends who are watching this thread.... the two bikes I am getting here in the US ( Dec) will be a 1000 dlr each, or a very small tad over that, but not much .... I think thats a very realistic price for a bike which can be ridden as is . but also can be easily upgraded to all kinds of configurations later on.

By the way .this is not a cheapshoot to just simply sell the two bikes. Its information about a bike which is so truly unique in the thread it belongs to, which of course wasnt started by me. there are no links , no homepage in signature .. and and and

As a happy husband of a beautiful young Asian wife, I can assure you it's a rewarding end goal. A bit challenging at times...

Nice bike too - although the folding size looks like it will be a bit on the large side. I prefer ones with the rear wheel folded under. But it looks like it will be a fantastic ride.

Live in Japan, so that makes 2 of us , although we are not so young anymore.

On the bike front I'm perfectly happy with a larger bike. Its my main goal in fact as I'm 6'5. Happy to carry around a larger fold. I'm not looking for a brompton fold. My wife has one of those, they are great bikes but not for me.

Goodness - 6'5 in Japan?? You must look like a giant there. I'm 6'1, and I stand out quite clearly anywhere I've been in Asia. Certainly your folder has to be a special one to accommodate your size. This Tern does look like a nice, big strong one. Will you get some type of telescoping seat post, or do you think the standard one will be high enough for you?

I think the seat post should be ok as measurements from my current bike setups are within the max/min specs listed on the eclipse. Plus most of my height is upper body vs legs. I use a nice adjustable stem to compensate for that

What does that adjustable stem do? Move your handlebar up and forward a couple inches?

[MENTION=375382]tdong[/MENTION]. Thanks for letting me know. But I already have the versa shifters and alfine stuff from one of my other builds. However, I'm trying to find some nice fenders for 24" wheels, if anyone has any idea. I'm thinking Honjo type, but obviously for the smaller wheels.

seem like sks makes them for 24" wheelsets also, sks is the "standard" for fenders.

I've seen that bike at JV Bike in Vancouver, BC, though it's not currently on their website.

The OP's plan is interesting in that there was already an Eclipse s11i model which has the Alfine 11 hub, fenders, rack and dynamo lighting.

I suppose it might be possible to change the Uno into a less accessorized version for less net money though.

I'd personally just pop it in the trunk & take it out for picking up lunch at work (30 mins,...not much time). For me, the simplicity with the option to mod later on is the key to my liking this. I can get any other model here in the USA,...I ONLY want the single speed. It's madd SMEXY!!!

Hi. Is it possible to install a gates drive system in a tern eclipse? I just ordered mine and hopefully I get it in the next couple days. I prefer the Uno because it comes with disk brakes and I want to upgrade it without throwing away oem stuffs that comes with it.

You would have to cut the rear frame to get the belt on. TheGgates belts are not like a chain and can't be opened up. Roger

Is there a safe way to do that? Any hardware I need to use for the install to make the frame rigid after the cut?
