Well this is interesting....

Voluntary evacuation notices less than a mile from my neighborhood. Winds being squirrely, so the potential for this thing to go anywhere is high.

From about 2:30PM this afternoon:

About 4:30PM:

And about 6:25PM:

(the dark "clouds" are really smoke from the larger fire, not clouds)

They say it started around noon and now they're saying it's about 1000 acres. Wow.

It's going to be a long, hot and potentially dangerous summer.

We went through fire-related evacuations in 2000 and 2011. Spent the few days before evacuations kicked in watching the orange sky and breathing in the smoke, so I might know what you're going through. The firefighters can only do so much - it's up to mother nature at this point.

Hope the fire gets under control before too much damage is done.

I hope you are doing okay. Our prayers are with the victims and evacuees.

130,000 acres burning in Colorado in 9 different fires. (that's over 203 square miles)

Pray for rain and no lightning.

Thanks for checking. The evacuation threat for me has retreated for now. I still have stuff pre-staged, just in case, though.

Looks like the fire is not threatening COS proper at the moment. It's been moving west and north, so some of the towns on the way up Ute Pass towards Woodland Park. Manitou Springs evacuated for a day. They're saying winds may shift around to the west tonight, which could push it back towards the "urban interface".

I guess because of the proximity to the city - that urban interface - this is the highest priority fire in the country right now.

And quicker than that, the fire raced down the hill and burned the neighborhood next to mine. So far, my house is OK... but I had to evacuate on Tuesday. But I took the important stuff!
