Retapping BB's

Customer has a French threaded Peugeot, he is attached to.. wanted a new BB , 68-103..
Of course Italian or Brit standards remain, French thread, has become yesterday's news..

Any of You had success rethreading French 35mm BB
into the South of the Alps
Italian 36 ?
thinking Thread reversal and how much closer Brit (as if 34.8mm)
to 35mm French is, Italian is the way to go..

Feedback?

Grazi..

..

I have never done it, but if you get it to Italian, you can buy sleeves to make it standard threading.

You can still get French BB for square taper

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Bicycle Research made a reamer/Italian tap set for just this purpose:

They're hard to source these days, but perhaps a local shop may have a set?

Otherwise, French thread BB cartridges are available from Velo-Orange.

Bikes: Kirk Custom JK Special, 86 De Rosa Pro, '84 Team Miyata,(dura ace old school) 80?? SR Semi-Pro 600 Arabesque

sold out of 103 next size up 107 seems like a better option than retapping..... buy 2 if the guy is keeping the bike for a really long time

Phil makes French retaining rings (not really cups buy...) and various BB spindle lengths/tapers. No frame mods and completely reversible. But we don't know if there are other reasons to mod the BB threading. Andy

Yea, I've been aware of Phil option for over 30 years...
old style stainless tube sleeve
and newer machined aluminum sleeve over bearings, one..

I have used both the Velo Orange and Phil bottom brackets on my French bikes. Both work, but the Phils fit better and allow adjustment for chainline. As to fit, specifically, look to see how deep the threads have been cut into the BB shell. If the threads are only 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch wide, the VO BB will not screw in all the way.
