Bonding Cable Stop

I have been asked to glue cable stops to a frame for brakes and rear derailleur. Bonding them on because the original paint needs to be preserved. Will JB Weld hold securely enough to do the job? I have little concerns about the derailleur stop, but brake cable stops so he can run a split line to the rear brake has me wondering if the bond is durable enough to last long term.

To what material? Very doubtful,, especially with JB Weld and the preserving the paint issue. Most glues are going to need paint scuffed to adhere to and then the bond is essentially the paint and under material bond.

I guess one could find out the shear strength of JB Weld and do the math WRT the cable highest tension (and add the 100% safety factor) to come up with the stop's surface area on contact. If I were you I would not expose myself to this liability. (Or if I were the rider I wouldn't ask for this solution). What's wrong with a clamp around stop? Andy

The paint directly underneath the stop will be removed so that the bond is metal to metal. He wants to get rid of the cable clamps and use stops to get a more up to date look, and better brake performance, yet keep the original paint as it is in really nice condition.

I will stick with my gut feeling on this and offer to do the derailleur stop, but not brake cable stops.

Smart choice. It's funny when the best thing is to say no. Andy
