can anyone tell me where i can find specific information on building a wood bicycle frame? by specific i mean the name/type and specs for the plywooods that can be used, the name of the different adhesives that could be used, any info at all? please help, fast eddie outty

Finland Birch Plywood. Not just plain Birch Plywood. I've seen one before about 20 years ago, made in Italy. I used to work with Finland Birch in high end limosines in the eighties. It is very stable/strong but very expensive. If I am not mistaken the bike I saw was made of Finland Birch. Google it for info. I've wanted, for years to make one, but just haven't got around to it. I don't know about adhesives though.

It seems the first bicycle, the "Laufmaschine", was all wood & invented in Germany in 1818. Some bike historians do not count it because it had no pedals & so was more of a scooter-type machine.

Yeah. That guy's my hero. I've been praising him for years. And he makes more than frames. He also makes his own headset, seatpost, saddle, helmet visor... even a CF helmet for his dog. Did you check out his axle-less front hub?

i build ride and race gravity speed bikes. there are no pedals on these bikes. they are mounted "jockey" style and raced downhill on roads for speed. heavier is better in gravity sports so weight is not an issue on what wood i use. the desing im working on calls for the head tube to be metal with metal brackets welded to it to mount it to wood. im plannin on using the swingarm from a fully sprung mountain bike for the rear, so actuallly only the front half of the bike would be wood. this would allow me to use the tools i have to build a bike custom made to my dimensions, keep correct weight distribution, and have a fully sprung bike. no one manufactures g-bikes so if a person want more than to just modify a bmx frame, you gotta build it! im just trying to cut costs, plus i really enjoy designing and building. any thoughts on how i might improve my design or any more input on wood/materials? this sight is really helpful, i appreciate the input i find here. fast eddie outty

Bamboo frames are cool, but you could probably make a wooden bike out of Hollowtube if you had the same carbon budget. I remember that the Gougeons said that if henry ford had had a carbon wood composite they were using for springs, he would have used them instead of leaf springs. Now that may not sound like much of a claim, but wood carbon is very light and came in at 4 dollars a pound. So the wood was really being used at those prices.
