is this material aluminum or steel?

Steel. It was Columbus' first attempt at an aero tubeset, and was introduced in the early 1980s.

Don't they also make one called "airplane" or something to that nature now out of aluminum?

Yes; Airplane is 7005 alloy Aluminum.
