There are a bunch of sites like this online where you can register a copyright. Then you have the ammo to sue people and/or make them stop using your name after the date you register it. It only costs about $50 or so.

You probably want a trademark, not a copyright. You should look at live wire's site above to see the flip side of this which is the advantages of trading under your name. Basically that you are the brand and the product that is really for sale. There is a related idea that if you drive the name you can push more stuff through that tube once you have some recognition that you can through a name other than one's own. Amazon is an example of that philosophy though with the edgy name. But some small business types feel that on a smaller scale they can get further with a personal name than a flash one. Like one's doctor is in business with his name vs. each one coming up with something like Healthsystics.

OK, here's my non-cheeky ******* answer

-Google it, you might be suprised who/what else is assiciated with that name.
-Do a cheap copyright (like the above) and start using it, everywhere, as much as possible.
- When it comes right down to it though, if your name isn't well known when some big company decides they want to use it...you're at their mercy. How much can you afford to fight it? Cloud Nine is now Caletti Cycles- Luna Cycles has had some issues w/the Luna energy bar co, AFAIK, they have agreed to live and let live.

Also, what kind of bikes will you be building? That makes a big difference in how people perceive the names.
