Not shaky after a ride sounds real good, Payton. Still, at your next scheduled doctor's appointment, you might ask about testing for a1c. It gives a sort of average glucose reading over the past three months, with the most recent levels having the most influence.

A pint is 473 ml (had to look it up) ... you could increase the amount you drink to about 750 ml in an hour, especially if it is hot.

You might also investigate electrolytes.

Also ... I have no idea how reputable this site is, but it provides a chart with an idea of how you might feel when your blood sugar is at different levels. If you're at 68 after a 30 min ride, you're probably lower than that by the end of a 60 min ride.

And finally ... what do you crave? Specifically, what food is it that you're craving?

The article mentioned Diabetic Werewolf Syndrome. Not sure if that defines me or not, but I did get a chuckle.

Hmm. Good question. I don't feel like I crave anything other than calories, but with that noted, I do seem to gravitate to carbs which is unlike me--I normally eat ~30-35% of my calories from carbs instead of the typical 50% carbs like the typical Westerner.

Try drinking Gatorade during your ride. It contains simple sugars that will keep your blood sugar up.

That might be part of the problem. You might need more carbs as you cycle more. A granola bar or a banana just prior to riding or mid-ride might solve the problem.

I'll give these suggestions a try.

FWIW, I rode Saturday, and it was a scorcher (3:00 PM with a heat index of 100). When I hit the hill (fortunately in the shade as the hill meanders through a forest), I showed some restraint in hopes of not taking one step forward and a dozen backwards ;-) Although this was just a 10 mile ride, I didn't experience any post ride cravings.

Not to self: eating a bag of M&Ms after riding in to work is probably not the best idea...
