Helmet Recommendations

I recently purchased a Giro Savant...but my head looks like a damn mushroom. Can anyone suggest a SAFE helmet that it less mushroom top by personal experience. I heard that the Kask line is less mushroom like and very protective, the mojito in particular

Thanks!

They are pricey...but I love my Kask Vertigo 2. I have a big head and did not want to amplify it more than I had too! Caught mine on sale during the July 4th Holiday. I like the way all the foam is covered preventing dents. The fit is easy to obtain as well, this thing hangs onto your head before you even fasten the chin strap.

The more money you pay, the less they look like a mushroom...

My gourd is 62 cm which is the listed max size for the Kask. I would say maybe 63 cm at the max.

I had a Specialized Max that was HUGE compared to the Kask. It was maximum mushroom head!

Lol...gourd...thats funny. I wear a size equator and a half for hats. I hope the Kask Mojito fits. It comes in a L. My current helmet, the Giro, does come in an XL and I have the XL.

Just make sure the place you purchase from has a solid return or exchange policy. I got mine from Westernbikework.com. I just looked and they are currently not on sale right now. Amazon always makes their sellers honor a Amazon approved return policy.

I really like the Specialized Max. Couldn't care less what it looks like on me. If you have a large head... you have a large head. No sense in trying to make it look smaller by wearing an undersized helmet.

I wear a sweatband in the summer and a thermal hat in the winter, and the Max is great for being able to fit over them wide open, then 6 or 7 clicks and it's good and tight.

^^^^^^^^^^I still have my Specialized Max and keep it as a backup. It is a good helmet...the Kask still has room for the helmet liners I wear to keep the sweat at bay.

Bikes: See my sig...

With helmets the smoother the shape the better it will protect your head / neck... anything with protrusions can catch on the ground in a crash and cause rotational injuries to the neck which can be far worse than a concussion.

Helmet manufacturers seem to have taken note of this although there are still quite a few helmets I would not purchase because they have yet to evolve.

My day to day helmet is a Bell Metro which is extremely comfortable and cool, for road and mtb I use an Alpina which is very light and extremely well vented.

Bikes: This list got too long: several ‘bents, an urban utility e-bike, and a dahon D7 that my daughter has absconded with.

I recently went with a Giro Sutton MIPS. A deciding factor was the amount of adjustability in a small shell. When winter gets here I should be able to adjust it to fit over my Balaclava.

The downside is it is hot (compared to a linen driving cap) and the small number of holes makes it hard to mount lighting hardpoints.

Think you look better in a Hockey helmet?

They're not about vanity .. stay away from mirrors and you wont see yourself in it.

Yes...my hockey helmet is not mushroom shaped, so I definitely look better in that.

I know its not about vanity, but safety for my cranium....but I wouldn't mind if the look was half-decent. That's all.

The Kask Mojito came from AMZ today, but is a tad too tight, so I am sending it back. My damn head is more oblong than large, so its hard to find a helmet that fits "well".

I do have a Bell that fits well, but is so damn hot. The heat does not release very well. I thought I was going to have a heat stroke today! I also had the Giro Savant, which also fit well and was cooler than the Bell, but still hot. This is why I wanted to try the Kask. They are coming out with an XL this year. As of current they only go up to L.

Ended up repurchasing the Giro Savant in XL. It fits great and has good air flow. I will wait for the Kask XL to come out and then I will purchase that.

As for security I don't skimp nor I allow to get 'steered' for looks. Get a look for the POC Trabec ones. Yes... they come with sun visor (detachable) so you may put or remove depending on personal prefs, but I use it routinely with the sun visor on.

Look at it: Trabec Race - POC

Liked it because is well ventilated, very resistant, have several adjustments to suit your head and covers more the neck.

I get nose miffs and fun looks from the 'evil skinny roadies' for sure when I hang with them. But along the glasses they protect something that's precious for me: My eyes and of course, the sun visor protects too the delicate skin of the nose. I reckon that in a skinny roadie, strapped to the hangers, the sun visor may interfere with LoS but that's not my case on my 'flat bar hybrid' .

When I ride with bikes I care for security and comodity, not looks.
