click on the directions button. Type in the starting and ending addresses. Make sure the route google maps comes up with is actually the one that you take......and the distance will be listed.

Select your start point.
Select your end point.
Select the bicycle icon.

Read the distance.

What, specifically, are you having trouble with?

Google earth desktop lets you measure custom routes point by poin...at least it did a couple of years ago.

If you are planning to using Google Maps to navigate while riding, make sure you are connected to the internet because your saved places will not show up without internet.

Google Maps now has this as well. I found it yesterday. Right-click and select Measure. Then just start clicking points along your route. It measures straight lines between clicks, so account for curves, etc.

FWIW: I find sites like RideWithGPS, GPSies, BikeRouteToaster, etc. far easier and with many additional useful features.

You can also place the curser on the route displayed and drag it over to a different road to customize the route.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

BTW- the OP is using a different program that uses google maps, but isn't the same.

On this program you click your start location then click the next point and it draws a straight line and tallies the distance. It's like a vector drawing program in that you have to work your way through curves with short straiht segments.

"Maps Measure" is an app that allows you to plot routes on a phone/tablet using Google Maps.

I want to plan a route, by creating various points, and then have it calculate the total number of miles.

I've been using gmap-pedometer.com for many years to measure distance of my runs and to plan routes. The "automatic" feature measures routes along routes, factoring in the curves. It also has a "manual" feature that goes in a straight line, and is useful for measuring paths that are not in their database (generally, these are off-road paths).
