I know what you are trying to do and would advise that you proceed with caution. Aero bars have their place (mostly with triathletes and ultra endurance cyclists), but are not a solution to hand pain or numbness even on short rides.

Go easy... the different riding position uses different cheek muscles. If different saddles and saddle positions has been your lot over these many years, then you won't be surprised to learn that using aerobars does not simplify matters.
