Anyone else have dual/multiple personalities when it comes to riding bikes? I've got a cyclocross bike that I have setup for longer rides and I wear road cycling type clothing as that is more of my "fitness" bike and I get after it, so to speak. I've also got a path/commuter bike that I just take when I go a short distance to work, store, pub, and I wear normal clothing. Havent really seen too many ppl like this where I live. Is there anyone here who is like me?

I have a commuter that it was originally made for racing, now with fenders, cargo rack, brooks saddle, and permanent lights still get good speed for those days you are running late.

I commute year round with good weather bikes and dedicated winter bikes. Mountain bike on the weekends, 26er and 29er dual suspension, plus a fat bike for year round riding ( dirt and snow) Plus studded tires for all my mt bikes. Also a touring bike which I use during the warmer months. Plus some of my commuters are set up to ride dirt on the way home during longer daylight times. And a tandem cruiser for ice cream runs. I find most serious bikers have many bikes and multiple ways to pedal.

I have a couple of SWB recumbents that probably look pretty similar to anybody else. I'm convinced one is faster than the other so I reserve one for easy rides the KATY Trail and the like and use the other for faster road rides. I'm thinking that I probably look pretty much the same to other folks regardless which one I'm riding.

It's winter in the northern hemisphere. You're new to this, but it happens every year. Roll with it.

I don't understand the question. When I see someone out on a bike, they are wearing clothing. Am I supposed to file that information away for the off chance I see them again for a comparison?

I never wear clothing/attitude/face that would mark me as "Jeff The Cyclist". Otherwise...I wear whatever's appropriate for the ride on whichever bike I'm choosing to use.

i wear what is appropriate for the ride? If just going to pubs or something, whatever clothes I am going to be wearing...if I am going for a long ride, cycling clothes. Can't say it is different personalities, just recognizing when you are being utilitarian vs commuting or recreating.

There is nothing at all wrong with having multiple personalities. I've come to view them as a significant life benefit. The trick is to learn how to properly manage them. In my case, that's where the doctor came in.

I like the funny responses all! What I was trying to say for those unclear, is that around here it seems that most people stick to one type of riding, whether it be fitness, commuting, casual etc. I however do not. I will be on a long "fitness" ride in morning and then switch bikes and clothing for a grocery run in afternoon.

Do that all the time. Between the GF and I, there are five bikes on the first floor of my house. Two Surly LHTs, two custom road bikes and her fixie. We commute, do road rides, some off-road riding and use bikes for transportation to things like dinner and a movie. I also do self-contained touring. The GF tried it but never really took to it.

I think that's somewhat common among the C&V crowd. Even though my normal daily ride includes a full kit with spandex and cycling shoes. I try to also keep a bicycle setup with platform (or toeclip) pedals. And I've found a nice really cushy saddle that works well for me when I am wearing "pants" (and underwear).

I read Grant Petersen's Book "Just Ride".... and it inspired me. But I can't say I've actually found the "NON-sport" cycling setup that I am really crazy about yet. I tried casual riding (what I call it) on vintage steel. But the classic "10 speeds" seem to be built a little aggressive for regular clothing (imho). Or... at least the ones I've tried.

I know some hardcore roadies who can't fathom the fact that I want to ride different types of bikes on different types of trails/ there are other places to ride aside from paved roads - some of the most fun I've ever had on a bike was going down rough, steep rutted dirt trails at a local park on my fat bike on a Sunday afternoon in January during a gentle snowstorm. No one else around ... Just me and the bike.

As a Gemini, I definitely have dual personalities. Never even knew about what a Gemini was until I was in my 20s, at a big ol' party, and a gal asked me my sign, told me she would have guessed that. Funny thing is I am quite moody and do have two personalities.

Really crazy thing is there is a Brooklyn brewery (Evil Twin?) and they have a beer called Ron and the Beast Ryan. Ummm....my given name is Ryan but my nickname is Ron. (a teacher who called on me and asked me my name heard it as Ron and it stuck).

Too bad I drink cheap beer to afford bike parts, so I've never had it.

As for the OP...I commute to work daily, I road ride in full roadie kit on race bikes. I ride and race cross. I also ride to work in shorts and tees. Yup, I do all sorts of cycling. I just wish more roadies used a bike to get around, not just race. Most of the roadies I know don't give a hoot about advocacy or riding to reduce carbon output. Shame.
