Freds have a tendency to start threads and never respond to any of the replies so the helmet will simply reflect who you are.

Dont worry at all what other people think. The fact is that these days most people dont think anyway.
I for instance ride either a recumbent bike or trike, and wear T-shirts and rugby shorts. I am happy riding, and dont give one whit what others "think". Why should I care? I will not change what I do or how I ride.

I always thought a "Fred" was somebody who dressed and used components that weren't quite 'up to road bike standards' (i.e.; wearing tube socks and flannel shirt while riding), and somebody who used things 'way above what was needed' was, instead, a "poseur" or a "dooshe".
Fred #1 , Someone who has all the latest and greatest gear, no expense spared to look like a pro racer, but no more accomplished then average. The ubiquitous weekend warrior.
Fred #2 , Someone the same as #1 but 10+ years out of date. May have actually been a fairly accomplished rider, but no longer in their prime.
Fred #3 , Someone who has an eclectic mishmash of excess gear that actually works well, and gets used on a regular basis.
#1 is usually a disparaging label, #2 and #3 are more in fun, and can even be a compliment, or source of pride to some.

Yeah, but people are going to scoff anyway. If you like the hat, wear it.
The trick is developing the panache to carry it off. Then it will become cool and everybody will want one.

Sorry, but #1 is no "Fred", that's a "poseur". In fact, that's the definition of a poseur.
There seems to be 3 versions of "Fred".

Fred #2 , Someone the same as #1 but 10+ years out of date. May have actually been a fairly accomplished rider, but no longer in their prime.

This particular aero helmet seems to have had the long back cut off on newer models or I"m looking at the wrong thing. Other aero helmets are certainly funny looking. Though if I saw someone out wearing one I might half assume this guy is serious and going for the land speed record but I'd still make fun of him at the bar and may also assume any of the other options available for me to assume.

These aero sections do NOT add any stream lining whatsoever but they do offer the distinct danger that if you fall you can break your neck from the aero section spinning your head around.
Manufacturers have gotten the message that they are leaving themselves open for lawsuits and are making more and more round helmets sans aero sections.
Tell me - would you rather look like a fred or have a broken neck?

No offense is intended, but your problem is that you care what others think. Once you free yourself of that lunacy you'll be able to wear any helmet (or no helmet) and be happy wearing it (or not).

This is the best answer. I was planning on getting the helmet after reading the other responses, but your statement there is spot on. Thanks for that

Maybe I'll grow my hair out really long, get a very tight perm into a huge afro then spray 1960's Aqua-net hair spray into it.
Harder than fiberglass and more impact resistant provided your head doesn't meet with any sparks its all good.
Then will I look like a Fred?
BTW> meet Fred.

Even with the "modern" locking mechanisms, every year I still catch maybe a half dozen people wearing helmets backwards. I usually clue them in. One woman laughed and responded "So that's why it's so uncomfortable."

I occasionally see those too. I rode up to one guy and said "Hey, I don't want to embarrass you but your helmet is on backwards. I wouldn't say anything but it's a safety issue." He was really thankful, said he never wore one before but got one to wear while riding with his grandkids.
