Can someone explain how Watts = Exertion?

Yeah, folks focus on the fact that their computer charger, or light bulb is specified in Watts and think "electrical". They forget Thompson's experiment (boiling water using the energy applied to boring a cannon barrel) showed that mechanical energy has a heat equivalent. In 1798!
The point is, the Watt is a measure of power (energy per time) and it's applicable to any energy - electrical, mechanical, thermal, light- or radio-wave, or nuclear. All of the "optimal chain lube" experiments measure energy lost (or rather, mechanical energy converted to thermal) in Watts.
