Do you wear cycling specific clothing?

Do you wear cycling specific clothing (excluding shoes, gloves and helmet) regularly for rides?

khuon 05-14-05 07:07 PM

I find my cycling-specific clothing to be the most comfortable type of clothing for riding. I just have to remember that like gravity, the "strengths" decreases as an inverse square of the distance I am from my bike.

RonH 05-14-05 07:14 PM

Always.
I tried commuting in jeans during the winter but found it to be uncomfortable.

On my weekend rides I always wear bibs and a jersey - NO T-shirts.

rmwun54 05-14-05 07:42 PM

You bet, I use to use cotton tees but that's archaic when you consider sweat sticking to it. Today's cycling clothes is way more comfortable so it make sense.

Dewbert 05-14-05 08:08 PM

Just started wearing cycling clothes...big difference!

overthere 05-14-05 08:21 PM

of course. As an under 1 year newb, I learned last weekend the wisdom of short sleeves, as popular as the 'tank' styles are for women. Ouch. But then, a great excuse to buy a couple of new jerseys! Pearl Izumi outlet about 20 minutes away. Got 2005 sample jerseys at about 30% off...

SteveE 05-14-05 08:26 PM

Yes, both for my commute and my weekend rides. I've been riding in biking clothes for over 25 years. I wouldn't consider dressing for a bike ride any other way.

DieselDan 05-14-05 08:30 PM

I cannot ride a bike without bike shorts.

Machka 05-14-05 08:47 PM

Yes, of course! My cycling specific clothing is my favorite clothing! :)

lilHinault 05-14-05 11:15 PM

yeah, I"m fat and out of shape and my ass needs all the help it can get, plus I'm more safely-conscious now, so the padded Sugoi shorts and bright yellow jersey (and helmet!) are what I'm riding in these days.

And face it, jersey pockets are handy!

forum*rider 05-14-05 11:36 PM

I would have to say no.

When I ride to school it's a short commute(<15mi) and I really don't want have to change clothes every morning.

'nother 05-14-05 11:40 PM

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Shorter, non-"workout" rides (errands, taking the kids for a quick spin in the trailer, etc.): no. Longer or more "serious" rides: almost always. I find cycling jerseys (the kind with pockets in the back, but not the kind with crazy-ass logos and whatnot) and bib tights are the most comfortable. I would not want to be wearing jeans and a T-shirt for a 50-mile ride! HOWEVER: when I dismount the bike, I find the tights to be extremely uncomfortable, so they come off shortly after the ride ceases.

So I am to understand that you find this...

... more comfortable than this?

Are you talking about physical or mental comfort?

Where can you get that Oscar the Grouch jersey?

I want one.

It's a Pearl Izumi jersey. Many places carry them. You might want to check Performance too.

lilHinault 05-14-05 11:55 PM

Oscar The Grouch rules!!!!

I think at certain times fashions were influenced by cycling, "knickerbockers" are ideally suiting to cycling, and I remember the trousers with very small-diameter cuffs in the 1980s, capris may have been influenced by cycling, or simply a high tide, not sure. When gas is $5 a gallon I expect to see a lot of everyday fashions that just happen to be good for bike riding.

forum*rider 05-14-05 11:56 PM

I am so getting that.

All the riders around here in their team kit and with their serious expressions are just begging to be passed by someone wearing one of those:D

I'm not so into the team kit either. I wouldn't mind owning them if they were given to me but I really don't feel compelled to buy any. I suppose if they had an interesting design or something... And that's the thing. While I have a lot of plain jerseys (because they're cheap), I also like ones that have a neat design. Most of those are ones from rides I've personally done or sometimes certain advertisement products (I love my Redhook beer jersey) and others just have interesting artistic or humourous images.

I really want a jersey with this on the front

And this on back.

MadMan2k 05-15-05 01:18 AM

I saw a place that did custom jerseys, but they probably weren't high quality, and they cost a lot...

Brian 05-15-05 03:42 AM

I ride in full gear when I race BMX, and bike shorts and a jersey on the MTB. I like the plain jerseys, like a solid color Fox, and I troll ebay looking for Rock Shox Garb. Their retro "Bowling Shirt" styling appeals to me. After a 4 hour ride today, I mowed the lawn in baggy MTB shorts and a short sleeve jersey. Dork pride at its best.

Trekke 05-15-05 05:30 AM

I ride bike specific cloths on every ride. Some ask why. Because I can. However I do not wear replicas of team kits. I keep it simple, visible and comfortable. Functionality is more important to me that looks. I do like Oscar The Grouch though :)

hear you on that, my most preciuos clothing are my cycling jerseys and my bibshorts, and during winter time, I just look at them and think when will, I wear you again, and the time isnow.....

Guest 05-15-05 11:38 PM

Yep. I don't feel comfortable in anything else but cycling clothes when I'm riing.

Koffee

my58vw 05-15-05 11:45 PM

Has to be cycle specific... and actually for me now unless on the trainer bibs...

Of course I race and it is 90 percent of the time team kit...

JenM 05-15-05 11:49 PM

I just wear regular store bought capris or knickerbokers, and a regular shirt. I don't want to look like a super-fit bicycle rider if I happen to stop for coffee. If it's cold, I wear bike shorts under the capris to prevent a chilly breeze!

That's exacly what you'll be seeing when I ride!

cyclezealot 05-16-05 12:14 AM

I have wondered if I were to ride w/o cycle specific gear, what would get me off the bike the fastest...lack of a wicking jersey or bike shorts... I think lack of the jersey..
reason..the sweat absorption of cotton..I would be miserable within 5 minutes...W/o bike shorts/chamois...probaby take 10 miles before my arse would terminally hurt.

Elisdad 05-16-05 01:00 AM

I wear non cycling specific gear when I ride. I use wicking tshirts and compression shorts underneath boardshorts. I bought four tshirts for less than the price of most jerseys and two pairs of compression shorts for about $10 each. I saved a lot of money and get almost all the performance of regular cycling clothing.

I'm new to mountain biking so I've tried to minimize my expense this year since my main budget has been blown on he actual bike. I'll probably invest in cycling specific clothing next year when my budget is fresh.

blue_neon 05-16-05 02:34 AM

When you said 'cycling' specific, i'm taking into account proper cylcing clothes, tops and pants ect. Although I do appropiratley dress, shorts, gloves and that. Certaily not jeans or pants.

When i say cycling specific i mean that like when a person goes and rides for whatever they care to do, they dont wear the stuff you buy at Macy's or whatever, but they wear the stuff you would find at JensonUSA or some of these cycling online retailers. THe shorts, the jerseys, stuff that says like CAMPAGNOLO on it
