YMMV depending on the pedals you use though.
You guys have never hit a pedal in a corner? Admittedly track bikes have higher bottom brackets, but I've hit pedals on every one of my other bikes, even my commuter with 170mm cranks! (And even with ultra thin spd-sl pedals on my road bike.) It's jarring, but not "knock me off my bike" jarring. Maybe if I was riding a fixed it would be though.

It is a compromise between hard rubber for long tire life, versus soft rubber for traction (especially when wet). Gatorskins are firmly in the former camp, which is why I recently switched to Schwalbe One. I got tired of the Gatorskins turning into skates when wet, and in the summer, my morning rides encounter a *lot* of wet due to poorly-maintained lawn sprinklers.

Until I got a road bike, I never did with the MTB. The first time I did it, I nearly went down just out of the shock of it, every time since I've learned to not let it scare me. I do it on occasion now, although I've finally got it through my mind to not pedal through sharp corners and to make sure the pedal on the inside of the corner is not bottomed out, and it hasn't happened in probably a year. I've got 170s as well.

To fixed gear riders everywhere from someone who has always ridden a geared bike: Welcome to my world. When I ride cornering ability is determined by tire grip on whatever surface I am riding on, be it dry or wet. Fixed gear riders are more often affected by how hard they can lean into a turn. Rarely does this lean angle exceed tire adhesion. On average, riders whose bikes have gears do longer rides and are more likely to ride in rainy conditions. It takes more time for fixed gear riders to acquire sufficient wet weather riding experience than riders of geared bikes, on average, not discounting the fact that some fixed gear riders ride in all sorts of weather conditions

Been down there too

Who knew rain wet traffic paint could be slicker 'n "ice"? Not me. Fell hard commuting in PNW 36 years ago while cornering over rainy day X-walk paint too. There's a thrashing not to be forgotten. Have not been down due to traffic paint since.

For me overcoming meant continuing to ride wet, albeit treating traction on traffic paint with a whole lot more respect.
Over time anxiety dropped, but a heightened awareness for riding on paint has not.

Take it easy through corners until you learn how far you can lean without pedal strike. Eventually, it becomes second nature. And shorter crank arms help. I run 165mm arms on my fixed gear bikes.

I rode a few miles last night on wet asphalt and found out that the treaded shoulders on my new Bontrager H2s slide like butter when pushed. They also make a sound like dragging a squeegee across the road when they slide, which I can imagine is that shoulder tread deflecting. I might have been doing about 15 mph when halfway through the turn, both tires broke loose and I slid briefly sideways. There was no paint present. It was fun, but I took the rest of my turns a good bit slower.

They're 26x2 and have less than 50 miles on them.

Had anyone been present to witness, I surely would have fell.

Sounds like my Michelin Protek Cross Max when they were new. The pronounced, sharp shouldered tread grabbed gravel, loose dirt and grass really well, but felt squirmy and actually sounded squeaky on tight turns. After several months they've settled in and I've gotten accustomed to the feel. But they're not ideal for fast, tight cornering on pavement.

They corner great dry, although now I have that slight expectation of breaking traction. There's one deep groove down the side and I imagine that's where they deflect the most. Otherwise, the deep tread is quickly filling with small rocks. I had hoped to retain a little bit of off road performance in something with a smooth center but cornering on dirt is out of the question. Still, they should serve fine to pull a load on the highway to a destination and not be limited to pavement while I'm there.

They were cheap enough.
