MIPS helmets, safer or hype?

The idea behind MIPS sorta makes sense but theory and real world results don't always match up. Some say it works others say it only makes the helmet more expensive and less comfortable. I haven't seen any evidence of independent studies which confirm they protect heads any better than other helmets.

MIPS has problems, even from a design theory standpoint....and what helmet makers do to implement it makes it more problematic. Ofc MIPS Inc don't care, they get their money and don't police it one bit

I recently purchased a replacement helmet and I opted for a MIPS design. More as a why not, than any other motivation. It didn't hurt that Nashbar was also having a great sale on Giro helmets. (The only helmet that fits my fat head.) One thing I found is that the implementation by Giro (?) forces me to wear the helmet a little tighter than I'd prefer. Otherwise it tends to shift (a lot) making my helmet mount mirror pretty useless. In terms of overall comfort and airflow its similar to the helmet that it replaced. Greater margin of safety, who knows.

And for those that care, its white with black trim.

As one that plays a few sports, the frequency and generally the forcefulness that I am hitting my head biking versus something like hockey simply doesn't make the system make any sense to me. Maybe if you are racing and going down a lot it could provide more benefit, I just don't see it making that much difference the one odd time over the course of years that I may fall and hit my head.

I'd rather see something like that in my hockey helmet, where I am at risk of taking multiple hits a game to the head even in a pickup game.

From what I've read, there's no real independent study showing that MIPS is any better at protecting your head and reducing brain injury than any other SNELL or DOT type bike helmet. Everything you read about the benefits of a MIPS helmet is from the manufacturer, and is all based on the theory of the design. My new helmet has it, and I really don't see how it can improve the impact protection, the idea is that it slides a bit absorbing some of the initial impact, but it only moves about a quarter inch. If you wear a skull cap, I'd bet the helmet would move a bit on the cap before absorbing the full impact. 2¢

A Swedish company called Multi-directional Impact Protection System - MIPS - has revived and patented the slip plane concept, using two layers in the helmet to help the head rotate slightly on impact. The hope is to reduce the rotational component of an impact, thought to be a prime brain injury mechanism and related to concussion.
Are they made is Sweden? a rather expensive place to make things rather than China , that so Many companies use.

Is that the only source or do they License their Patent to other companies?

AFAIK, it is all licensing. Near as I can tell MIPS only has bureacratic/R&D facilities in Sweden. All manufacturing is elsewhere.
