I've gone through a couple different pairs of "modern" gloves and honestly, none of them stand up to (the the memory of) my old leather and crocheted gloves. Tape wrapped cloth bars + my crappy wrists/hands mean I need decent padding. I'm also not a fan of Star Trek fashion that seems to be designed to enhance sweatiness. Plus, to me, current styling looks kind of stupid while riding the Miyata 1000.
I've tried a couple pairs of leather/cotton gloves available on Amazon (in addition to "modern" ones), but they're utter trash. Honestly, I don't remember the brand I had (Spenco maybe?), but my old gloves were made from tough, supple leather, had great padding, were comfortable, cool and lasted over a decade.
Am I searching for a Coelacanth?
EDIT: Veeka?
Thanks

Good luck....I haven't found any....at least not black ones.
Aero Tech makes some nice ones if you can handle white/tan gloves.

I use the bontrager crochet gloves. Not very durable but apart from that they've worked well for me. Specialized and Giro both have perforated leather gloves which look nice but i have yet to try them.

Here, for nine bucks. Have lasted way longer than I expected.

Ok, so these aren't "traditional" biking gloves. So what. The quality is exceptional, the prices can't be beat and they are bullet proof. Don't be put-off by the "armoring" on the knuckles. It's really not that noticeable, especially the all black model, and you don't even feel it while wearing them. For mountain and road use, these things are awesome for $25 bucks. I have completely switched from "bike" gloves to fingerless Mechanix brand gloves. I bought two pairs of the "M-Pact" model. If you want full-finger gloves they come in a multitude of colors.

I was going to post the Nashbar gloves, but I was too slow.
At that price, durability isn't an issue, but all the same, mine are holding up well.

I suppose I forgot to add that I specifically *don't* want black gloves. On stiflingly hot summer days, the last thing I want is to wrap my hands with solar absorbers. Yeah, white crochet gets dirty/funky and natural leather palms darken with sweat, but I don't care about that in the least. They're first and foremost functional items.
I didn't even think about Rivendell. Those gloves look nice, but they're "Thinnies" - I disagree with their sales blurb that padded gloves are a crutch. Road bikes have always given me numb hands on longer rides and decent gloves prevent it (for me).
I supposed I'm open to "modern" gloves so long as they are understated, comfortable, padded in the right places and not mini hand saunas (black, spandex, etc.).
I was wondering about those Aerotech gloves...
Thanks

Planet Bike had some last summer (got them in a bike shop!), but I don't know about good. The few I've found lately have fallen apart at the seams, literally, and I haven't washed last summer's PB gloves enough to find out if they will last.

I guess I had a different experience because I dont remember those crocheted/leather palm gloves lasting very long. I think the modern ones are much better. But.. I do agree, many modern styles look awful - too bright and colorful. The Star Trek description is pretty accurate alright.
I use these and really like them, though I know you said you dont like black, OP. They're cheap, super comfortable, and look decent, imo.

Rivendell used to sell what they called a light summer glove, which was the same glove with padding - it's not there anymore.
I haven't tried the gloves I linked to, but they kind of fit the OP description.
I hate padded gloves, as well, and I buy every Giro Zero on sale in my size and usable color that I can find.

I am frustrated with poor quality cycling gloves. I have some neon yellow Mechanix full-finger gloves for cold weather, and some Gold's Gym weightlifting gloves from Walmart have been the most durable.

I plopped a pair of Aerotech gel gloves in with a general order I placed. We'll see how they turn out.

The sox thread got me wondering.
Since some folks are bothered by the tan line at the ankle, do you not wear gloves because of the line at the wrist?
I was once asked if I am a golfer from that pattern, but I think golfers only wear a glove on one hand.

I always wear gloves, especially on sunny days to acquire a distinctive, classic cyclist’s tan. In particular I wear gloves with a crocheted back for that “reticulated” tanning pattern, with the strap line. It’s a variation of Rule #7 of the Velominati,
Tanlines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp.

I now have a pair of Planet Bike and Aerotech gloves in my possession. Getting the gel version of the ATs was a mistake. The gel is an uncomfortable, stiff slab only at the heel of the hand - it's way too hard and creates pressure points. Otherwise, they're similar to the Planet Bike gloves, but made from thicker leather with a bit more padding sewn into the palm and with a more traditional velcro strap than the way the PB gloves close.
That being said, the PB gloves are comfortable, cheap and the terry cloth thumb back for wiping sweat is a nice touch.
My old gloves seemed like they were made with high quality baseball glove style leather. I'm guessing the days of finding anything like that are over.

Do a simple web search for crochet cycling gloves. They're readily available, from cheap to expensive, and I'll assume from low quality to high (although I don't know if there's a correlation).
For what it's worth, I have been using some branded Giant that I bought at the local Giant bike shop, and they last several seasons and have leather palms with minimal padding. They're cheap but are well designed and reasonably durable for the price.
As for sweat, stink, grime, etc.... wash them in the washing machine - it works wonders in cleaning them. I'm always surprised when people think that bicycle gloves - even the cotton and leather ones - can't be washed with the rest of the laundry. I do put mine in a mesh bag to keep the velcro from sticking to other clothes, and I air dry the cotton ones, but they're not fragile flowers.
