When I owned the bike shop, my point of sale system was set up to record the serial number of each bike sold with the customer's contact info.
At least twice that I can remember, I was able to reunite rightful owners with their bicycles thanks to people who had found the bikes abandoned, and thanks to the decal affixed near the bottom bracket with my store name and phone number.

Tonka Cycle & Ski- Some of the best personalized customer service I have ever received. My wife really hates all of the other shops in town. Being we are not skinny little bikers most talk down to us, the chubby folks at Tonka get us and understand when we say we ride a lot. 1500+ miles is more than most people that own bikes and we are hard on our equipment because of our size. They get that. No pressure sales too and will fit and help all they can.
