Cyclops roller question...

I bought a used set of cyclops rollers aluminum, and when I ride, I cannot get the front cylinder which is connected with the plastic tube to spin. The front cylinder is connected to the middle cylinder. I am currently using a mountain bike with knobbie tires on it. Should I be using slick tires on it instead? Or does the plastic tube need to be replaced?
