As to bike trails, the problem with the ones in America is very often they are taken care of at a local, not state or federal, level. This can lead to a patchwork of trails that may or may not connect, may change conditions as they cross various jurisdictional lines, may stop and start suddenly, and most don't go for more than a few miles. To find them, I like to use Google maps with bike routes turned on, and Open Cycle Maps.

Steepest I've ridden is Rialto Street, which is the 4th steepest in Pittsburgh at 24% and part of the Dirty Dozen race. I am partially thinking of trying the Dirty Dozen next year. Had 2 riding buddies try this year and they only made 8 of the 13 hills. The following is not my photo of Rialto. Last photo is from 1914 supposedly.

Here's a photo I took that day. Despite the clouds and thunderstorm warning all morning it never actually rained that day. Was just humid and sticky.

As some of you know, my partner, Rob, and I are training to go on our first cycling expedition at the end of March this year, which will take us from Las Vegas to somewhere in Canada. And given that neither of us have ridden a tandem bike before we bought one, we wanted to get in a bit of training first. So today, we went out to conquer our first mountain pass (1:4) and to put it lightly, we had our behinds handed to us very, very thoroughly.
So out of curiosity, what's the steepest hill you've guys have cycled? As in actually, made it up without having to stop more than once.
And does anyone know if the Rockies are going to be tougher than 1:4?

Bopple Hill on the West side of Canandaigua Lake (Finger lake in Central NY) rises 604 feet in 0.79 miles. The final 0.4 miles ranges from 15.7% to 22.6%, with an average grade over those 0.4 miles of 17.8%. That's the hardest hill I've done, but it's not the hill with the steepest maximum grade. That would be Protts Hill Rd. in Newfield, NY. It goes up 306 feet in 0.41 miles for an average grade of 14.2% - not all that tough, right? But the maximum grade is 26.1%. Uh-Ohhh. Bring your triple. I sure needed mine!
