Dude, chill! I was just offering my viewpoint and not just trying to take you down. I honestly did not feel any animus against you when I wrote that. Be happy.

I am curious, though--what other fora do you hang out on that are not as contentious? I'm really wondering because it seems to me, also, that just about any internet-based interaction usually turns into a giant pissing contest on venues such as these. If you've found more genteel places to hang out then that is great.

I think it's more like a lot of the folk on this forum come across as ****** bag know it all's .I belong to car forums and motorcycle forums and they can be ruff but at least we have a sense of humor and don't take our selves to seriously.

Of course I come across as a know-it-all windbag. I know everything and I am full of gas.

What's the trouble here?

I hear you.

I also belong to a moto forum. They're a rough bunch, alright. Many of them also hate cyclists. I wonder why?

I blame Strava.

Jealous I can actually go further on my bike than they can on their Harley?

I should elucidate further. I belong to a sportbike forum, specifically.

We call them "Hardlys."

I know. Bad behavior everywhere!

Ha! I used to be a mid-80's Japanese guy myself (really regret selling my Honda Magna), some great commuting bargains to be had that lasted forever, were very comfortable, and were dirt cheap to buy and operate. I know they got many more miles in a year than the Harleys that were bragged about but sitting in a garage waiting to be trailered to 20 miles outside Sturgis every August!

Hondas are GREAT bikes!!

Oh, I hate to digress; but you should see the looks I get from the Harley guys! They also say deprecating things about us on their own forums. I guess it is just the nature of the internet.

Yeah, always wished they brought the TransAlp here (at least more than the year or two they did). Everytime I am in Europe and see them running around, I get insanely jealous. Oh well, whenever I finally decide to spend cash on another motorbike I guess I'll just have to "settle" for the cheaper KLR.

Although, I would argue that a large minority of the BMW guys give the Harley folks a run for their money in elitism and snobbery....

Yeah! So ironic because this is coming from these fat, greasy, unsavory dudes usually hauling their just as unsavory bovine Harley "babes" on their pillions!

Don't know. But they seem to go through easy where I live. Just two or three years ago a woman was killed by a deer going completely through the windshield into the rear seat where it proceeded to kick her to death trying to get out. Not that unusual.

Ductile materials like steel bend when stressed, brittle materials like glass shatter. Apples and oranges.

And to accelerate slightly so the deer or jaywalker goes under the car vs through your windshield.

I'm sure that has something to do with why your user name rhymes with Maalox! Or is it Male Ox?

I belong to BARF (Bay Area Riders Forum) and the Aprilia forum (sponsored by AF1 Racing).

I've never ridden a Harley but it would never be my style of bike for sure. I have ridden a Victory bike and I did not like it. These dudes can put down Japanese bikes all they want but the finesse of Japanese bikes is really so much greater than anything Harley/Victory crank out. But, bikes are personal things, aren't they?

Anyway, I'm not about to put on 100 pounds, grow a gnarly beard, get tattoos, take drugs, or contract an STD; so that pretty much cuts me out of that particular crowd.

+100. Waiting for somebody to say that.

The swerving debate takes me waaay back to high school. 4 of us in a car going down a very straight, very lonely road in the middle of nowhere. A possum starts its slow walk across the road at least 300 yds ahead. The driver (newly licensed) didn't react at all. At that distance it would have taken a hair twitch of the wheel or a tiny tap on the brake to avoid. At about 100 yds we started to ask what the heck he was doing. His reply: "My Dad said to never swerve". He didn't. Plowed right over that little furry dude. The driver got a new nickname after that.

I did the same thing to a duck when I was 17 . I forgot about the engine cradle ,the duck bounced up and down under the car 2 or 3 times as it was passing under the car . My girl friend at the time was in the car with me . It was a bit unsettling at the time.
