I think this is the best new thread I've read on BF in a while. Congrats OP!

Wow! Just, Wow! What a tremendous difference this bike is going to have for me! With my GT I struggled mightily to get two miles in, and I do mean mightily. I was in a lot of pain once the two miles were up. Today, even being very sore from riding my GT the last few days, I easily did 5 miles!! I honestly could have gone another couple of miles, except, sorry don't mean to be graphic, I have some very bad chafing under my "apple bags" as my youngest calls them lol. The chafing was from power walking, which is what motivated me to switch to biking. The seat that he put on, oddly enough the exact same seat I had ordered for my GT off Amazon that arrives tomorrow lol, I think I will like once I am healed up. However being very sore in that sensitive area the seat was putting pressure in just the wrong spot, I could not find a position to relieve it enough to endure another round.
The place I am riding has a black top trail that is 1 & 1/8th mile long. Its 3/4 uphill on the way to the end so of course its 3/4 downhill on the way back. Uphill is a bad way to describe it, its mostly very minor uphill grade with a couple spots where you have to work a bit harder to keep your speed. The nice thing is I am very tired when I get to the end, but get to rest just enough on the way back to have motivation to go again. I did that twice tonight and then went a couple times around the parking lot to hit 5 miles. Had it not been for the burning pain I would have gone again. Also my legs feel really good right now, such a sharp contrast to what I had been feeling after rides the last few days.
I am really glad I found this form and made a post this morning. I would have never given Jamis a look had I not. There was just something about Jamis that caught my attention.
Big BIG thanks to Garilia!!

I strongly suggest you get some help from SQlabs. It will change your cycling life.

I really appreciate all the replies!! I especially appreciate the tip on Jamis bikes! I went to the closest LBS to me, they also happen to sell mostly Jamis bikes. I did something I never do, I am the type of guy that looks and researches hundreds of options when I can before I buy. However, this guy sold me first on the shop (about 15 miles from me, which is very close for where I live!!). He said he would stand behind anything he sold me and repair any frame/crank/pedal issues that came about because of my weight for free. He said the only thing I had to worry about would be breaking spokes on the back wheel, and if that happened he would build me a heavy duty high spoke count wheel for $80. Also they give 2 years of free service on any bike they sell.
I told him I wanted to look at a Jamis Coda Comp, he asked me where I was going to ride and told me I didn't want a Coda, he thought the ride position would not work for me. Instead he showed me a Jamis DXT Comp, set the seat and handle bars for me and told me to go for a quick ride. Wow! It was like going from my Great Grandmothers 68 chevelle v6 w/o power steering to a modern crossover SUV! It was that big of a change for me, unreal. Then when I came back and asked about upgrading down the road, he said for any bike they sell if I want to upgrade he will put the bike up for sale in the shop and put the entire proceeds toward a new bike. He said that the DXT Comps sell usually in a few days and he currently even has a list of people waiting for used ones. To seal the deal he said he would throw in the bottle holder and a bike computer and upgrade the seat for me, and he would do it for $650 all in including tax. I am not sure if that was the best deal, but I was sold on him and the shop and I loved the bike so I bought it.
I am about to head out for my first ride on it, I will report back later!

Good to see you found a solution. Always nice when things come together. As an individual who used biking to help loose weight, stabilized at 83 lbs off, you're on the right track. I would not rely totally on the bike for your exercise though. I would definitely keep walking too. Stir things up with different muscle groups, change of scenery so to speak, and still lots of fresh air. Congrats on your overall plan, you can do it

I did another 5 miles today, but by the time I was done I was literally in tears from the pain due to chafing. I am doing everything I can to treat the chafing, but unfortunately the seat on my bike puts pressure in just the wrong spots making the pain excruciating. I think I will have to skip a ride tomorrow and walk instead. I think I am going to order a https://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-No-Pressure-Bicycle-Seat/dp/B000DZGLVY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496879674&sr=8-1&keywords=Schwinn+Ergonomic+Adult+No+Pressure+Cycle+Bicycle+Bike
Its odd but I thought it might work just to use while I heal, there is nothing to put pressure on the sensitive parts with that seat, though it looks like it will be a bit strange to get use to.

Work with your dealer on the saddle. They certainly sound like they'll get you fixed up. Saddles can be a tough cookie to crack. Big and cushy are not necessarily the answer. You many actually need a slender hard one. It is hard to tell until you try them. As well, an old chafing trick I used to use was to apply a VERY liberal dose of baby powder to sweaty areas prior to doing the activity. That really helped sweat and chafing in those sensitive areas from starting. Liberal dose after soothed issues to. Good luck and keep after the saddle, you'll find one.

I had been using Gold Bond powder, but unfortunately I just sweat too much and it does not last through my walk/ride. I guess I could carry a small bottle with me and re-apply, there are a couple of bathrooms on my route. I have been using Aquaphor the last few days, if it can work wonders on tattoos I would think chafing would be easy. We will see.

I suggest trying Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel. It's a "feminine" product, but it works great down under the apple bags. My wife used to work with an Ob-Gyn who was an avid cyclist and he was the one who turned me onto it.

I used old reliable Johnsons baby powder. A buddy of mine also used plain corn starch. Took some everywhere in a ziploc bag. Cheaper too.

What kind of shorts and underwear are you using? If you are working out in cotton shorts and underwear, stop. Get a good pair of cycling shorts or alternately, compression shorts.

bibbiker1, your enthusiasm is a real kick to read for me (and I suspect for others, too).
To toughen up the "apple bags", here are some Shaolin Kung Fu exercises (testicle work, or "golden armor"). Do these, and you should be all set.

Thanks for all the replies!! I am for sure using the wrong underwear, using Duluth Trading free range, which are very comfortable but also 94% cotton. I have a couple pair of their buck naked which are nylon/spandex so I will switch to those when riding/walking. As soon as I can I will buy some compression or bike shorts.
I also ordered some of the anti chafing gel Garilia recommended. So once I get this healed hopefully it won't happen again!

You can set up a Long Haul Trucker however you want. I would caution you that as you ride, you will tend to adopt a more aggressive riding position. And most of that will happen quickly. Don't be that guy who comes back here 3 months after spending $750 on a comfort bike looking to upgrade to something better suited for longer, faster rides.
The budget thing is a legitimate concern, of course.

Old and in the way.
This is more than you asked for, but hold on I will get to the bike.
Hey I am 6'6" and started out at 350 lbs. So I feel ya. I had three knee injuries in two years while doing normal stuff and didn't want to end up in a walker by 60, so I got to work losing weight. Don't worry I am still fat, so I am not all that and a bag of chips as they say.
I have a Kona Jake that I used to start out with. CX bikes are built for a lot of abuse and if you use them on the road they can handle a lot of weight. I did a few hundred miles on that while I was getting in shape. I got a solid reasonable calorie intake estimate from my Doctor, and also got a calorie tracking app and stuck with it: I pretty much gave up processed sugar, alcohol and potatoes (oh sweet Jesus I miss French fries) and stuck with it. Seriously. I round everything up and try and leave 300 extra calories on the table every day. I don't eat more when I work out either. The first three weeks were horrible FWIW. Now I feel pretty good except for missing potatoes and ice cream.
I started small with 2 mile flat bike rides (and was whipped) and moved up to the ten to 15 range with hills, SLOWLY. Last weekend I did 37 miles. I used to do 25 3x a week and 60-80 on the weekends. I try not to think about that.
I have lost 25 lbs in just over 4 months, more importantly I feel like I am building a healthy lifestyle that will allow me to live better. Food is now fuel not a treat or a reward A reward is something like sitting down with a cup of (unsweetened) coffee or even just water. Movement is normal and sedentary the exception.
When I hit 330 I bought a road bike because I bike more with one. The Kona doesn't have the speed I crave, but its a great bike with the kids bike.
I have had good luck on craigslist with used bikes. It takes knowing what you want but I have found some great deals (I paid 500 for a bike with $700 wheels. Found a good hybrid for my stepson for $250). Some folks buy nice bikes and don't use them. Look for those people .
I cannot stress enough how much better this has gone by working both ends: diet and exercise. I feel better, my weight loss has been steady even on weeks where time prevents a lot of workouts.
So good luck and yes head over to the Clyde forum. You will be in good company

Omaha and Council Bluffs have hundreds of miles of bike trails. Get out and ride what you can even haul your bike to different starting points to get a change of scenery.

I realized halfway thru loosing 60lbs that I was not biking to loose weight, I was loosing weight so that I could bike. It's way easier and faster to climb hills with 30,20,or even 10 less pounds holding you back.
