im motivated by the fact that while im riding all my friends are gaining levels on world of warcraft and eating potato chips. so when we come back for our school reunion, i wont have a beer belly and they will.

I am the exact same way. I prefer it that way, I use rides on my own as a my time to chill and admire the terrain and scenery. Can't do that when I ride with others.

What keeps me motivated... that is a long one...
1. Training... beating or reaching a goal. It could be maintaining a 19 MPH average, maintaining a 90 RPM cadence, climbing a hill in a certain time, reaching a certain number of miles, etc.
2. Enjoying the time thinking of nothing but me, my bike and the scenery (or lack of it)
3. Knowing that every pedal stroke I take makes it closer to beating my number one problem right now.
4. Knowing that there is a nice ice cream sandwhich waiting for me back home.
5. Knowing that for just a few hours I am free.
Now what motivates me to go out and absolutly pound the crap out of my legs again and again on a steep hill interval... beats me... I guess I am just insane!
Sometimes it just takes a minute to focus before going to tackle it one more time!

I use Vittoria Diamante 23c right now though sometimes I like to find a 25c. 20c for sprinting though.
I used to use Ritcheys, still do occasionally I guess.

Get a computer and beat your previous time or ave speed...thats what my plan is....
today I cut my last ride from 47.5 minutes to 41.25 minutes...average went from 8 to 9mph...mileage was 6.47 of single track, fire road, street, water crossings, etc...
Thing that pissed me off is a guy pulled in to the staging area as I did and told me how out of shape he was cuz he usually does the trail in 24 minutes...so I guess thats my goal time!
