Sounds like a bad pump...

BUT...If your tires are in the 30-40mm range, and you weigh less than 75-80lbs, 60psi may be plenty. If the tires don't feel squishy and you like the ride, go for it.

I pump my 30 mm tires to 50 for road riding 40 for off-road.

Sounds like you need a new pump. Plenty of options out there. For a floor pump, I use a Bontrager Charger. Others use the Topeak Joe Blow. No doubt there are plenty of others that will do the job.

Little short compact easy to carru pumps are probably too much effort to get past 60, before you concede defeat ..

a full length frame pump physically moves more air. but people count grams too much..

floor/track pumps have your body weight pushing and the ground resisting.. you can lunge on the plunger too to get more force..

With the Sikca Impero pumps , there was a benefit to those steel pump heads you could use fences to push against,

hanging the wheel from the valve stem.

I use a cheap like $10 pump got from Walmart. It works fine getting 55-60 psi on my mountain bike but for my higher pressure tires that need 70-90 psi on my hybrid and if I ever decide to get a road bike the pump won't get the air in it needs. I hear there are two pumps? One for higher pressure tires?

I weigh 165 lbs. I was down to 135 before I decided to try truck driving, left that job and went back to old job working on computers in the IT field. Was attracted to money in trucking, but missed bike riding and my wife

Most probably your pump couldn't pump more than 60psi.

Why are you putting 55-60 psi in mountain bike tires? You really never need to exceed 30 psi on a mountain bike tire.

Get yourself a good pump fercripesakes!!

How cheap does a pump need to be for Wal Mart to sell it for $10 and still make money. Almost any name brand, and quite a few house brands will be better than that.
