Makes me glad to be in the cable generation. I've read that there were lever actuated rear deraillers. But I think they go back further than this one from the 1950's.

Judging by the responses in the Cycling Jokes thread, if you remember this joke and remember why it's a joke, then you probably qualify.

A cyclist dies and goes to heaven. Upon admission he's being shown around by Saint Peter and he spots a familiar-looking installation and asks about it. He's told its the celestial velodrome and is asked if he'd like a tour. They get inside and the cyclist is shocked to see Eddy Merckx zooming around the track.
"Wow! I didn't know Eddy was dead," said the cyclist.
"He's not. God thinks he's Eddy Merckx."

When you walk past bike racks and the only ones that ever make you think "nice looking bike" are more than 30 years old.

Well lets see....

I still ride single speed cruisers
I still have a LAN line with a rotary phone that works
My van is 32 years old and can run on leaded gasoline
My boat has a two cycle outboard with scuppers
And I still use a fax machine

I would say I am old skool

I think of old school as a mind set.... not a tangible.

Some people seem to arrest their development or progression at younger ages than others. Today... older values are sometimes thought of as better than modern ideals. So for some old school individuals are held up as valued.

But on the other hand... old ideas, and processes, are also thought to be slow, inefficient, outdated, and wasteful. And the term old school is considered a derogatory comment.

I'd like to think I can still appreciate the new... while I still enjoy the memories of the past. Not everything new is better... and not everything old is outdated or inferior. But realistically.... when the emotional attachment to the memory is eliminated.... most new ideas are better.

This was back on the first page, and is, IMO, a perfect definition.

The very reason we say “school” rather than just “old,” is to recognize the mastery, the discipline, and the teachers. Old is just that kid who lived down the street who could ride a wheelie better than anyone, old school is honoring the wisdom instilled in a comment by an ex-pro to you after a bunch sprint, even though it may not have been complimentary.

Nice. Got mine today. Weighed exactly 28.0lbs without pedals, then I put on a saddle I already had and chopped another 1/4lb off. Not bad for $389.

An Deore/SLX mix for under $400 is a very good deal. I haven't weighed the M4 I got for my son, it's a size 17". I don't think you could buy a 10 speed hardtail at a bike shop for under $1K or double what you paid at BD.

I cant get it anymore unless I add it myself....But now I use only 93. It doesnt have a catalytic converter and the gas port accommodates the old skool big leaded nozzles

One difference I've noticed:

Old school: Repair

New school: Replace

Yes! Cone and cup bearing systems, friction shifting, etc.

Old school could describe those of us that appreciate the beauty of a brazed lugged frame bike over todays bikes welded up by robots.

I was so disenchanted with the shifting of the Campy Veloce group on it, I removed the shifting mechanism from the brifter levers (I loved the lever shape ) and installed downtube friction shifters
so deep into the brifter age, I preferred lugged steel and downtube shifting

I still prefer tubulars on my nice bikes

- While I am totally modern on the MTB's now, I still prefer to ride vintage steel - not really brand specific but I like Italian stuff --

I'm not too different from a lot of the other folks in the classic/vintage section ---

Mountain bikes are not old school- they are new fangled.

I am Old School. No one else, nothing else. Only diplomas issued by me, mean anything.

I will let you enroll if you pass the application test and can afford the admissions fee ... but don't worry ... the fee scales with your income, because this is an economically inclusive school.
