Looks like there is quite a spread from minor repairs to total modification, which is probably fairly normal for cycling enthusiasts. It also looks like I'm not alone in my need to tweak my bikes.
While I certainly do find enjoyment out of modifying them, sometimes I can't help but wonder if it's not best to leave well enough alone.

My latest build:
$10 for a 1985 Schwinn Traveler
$15 each for tires
$10 chain
$5 tubes
... $0.50 innertube patch.
The rest of the parts were from my bin, which probably means I paid for some of them at some point, but too long ago to remember how much.
I definitely enjoy tweaking a bike, but after a certain point, I switch to a mode where I'm trying to see how long I can ride it without any changes.

I've kept track for the past 12 years. I spend about a nickel/mile (tubes, tires, chains, lube, gloves, wires...), ~$250 annually, which means $3K over 12 years. I paid $500 for the bicycle (new) 20 years ago (about $5K). That's with cheap parts and all my own labor. Continuing costs have swamped purchase price, at least for a bike that I ride a lot. One parked at a vacation house for occasional use would be different.
