Trek Custom...NOT
Okay, I WAS thinking of buying the top of the line Trek Domane but I wanting the SRAM setup instead of DI2. However, I did want the black Viper Red frame that is available when you buy an off the shelf Domane or when you just buy the frame. No problem I was told by my local bike shop, "go to project one" and build it the way you want. Well.......not really... you cannot get that color combo on a custom bike! WTF. You spend that kind of $$$ and they can't build it with the frame color you want? I also was thinking of a 53/39 chainring with a 32 cassette but could never get a straight answer on that one. So much for customization.
Funny, I originally thought of buying the frame and building. Bike shop talked me out of it with a nice discount but now back to building. Guess if I still want to do business with Trek I'll go that route. I welcome alterative suggestions from the group. Not impressed at all with the Project One hype. Thanks!

Domane is not top end, they have even more expensive models, but you are free to change the group on your own and sell the other.
may be a trade in deal worked out for your old but new components, that the shop can re sell.

Did you call, not email the factory or "Project One" directly to address your concerns. Seems like you should go straight to the source in a case like this, Can't imagine they would not want to work it out. That being said I agree with a total custom build in a case like this.

I did a Project One for my Emonda and was able to get the color and components. Not cheap, but well worth the extra cash.
Call Trek and talk to them.

I like that ^^
The Domane SLR 9 Disc appears to be nice, but I'd want a designed in feature that the Stache 9.7 contains... Which likely would throw-off the whole usability of the bike in doing so.

I would hope you got the color you wanted- its basically just a murdered out frame with a couple of red marks on a tube.
Murdered out seems to be what many of the cool kids like these days, especially at the higher end, so it makes sense for brands to offer murdered out as a 'customer color '.

I live by trek hq and go to their headquarters regularly. Surprised the project one team wouldn't custom paint for you. The paint shop their used to paint bizzare stuff like toilet seats from stories I've been gols.
