Recommendations for a rim and tire upgrade

Hi,

I ride a Cannondale bad boy with 700C 622x16C Alloy rims with 28 x 622 Bontrager hard-case triple protection tires. My setup has disc brakes.

I haven't had any issues with the rims and I've been quite pleased with the tires, very good rolling resistance and I've only ever one flat with well over 5K on them in the city. But I use the bike for work and ride hard, half of which is over cobbled roads and often in the rain (The Netherlands.)

I would like a something with more width, offers excellent rolling resistance and suitable for wet pavement and cobbled roads. I'd probably go with something like Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires but I'm out of the loop on a decent pair of rims to compliment the tires.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Without know exactly which tire, I will say that's one of the first places you can start. If that's one of the wire bead Hard-Case tires, it's probably going to be a pretty stiff ride and have a lot of resistance. Switching to a folding bead higher TPI tire will give you a smoother faster ride, but it may come at the expense of some puncture protection.

As for rims... I'm going to go with the old adage of "wider is better". I recently discovered HED Jet+ wheels, which are about 20mm internal, and they are honestly the favorite wheels I've ever used. I have a few others that are 17-18mm and can tell there's a difference to them. The Jet+ is basically just a Ardennes+ with a fairing on it for aero, so might start looking there.

I'd also suggest at least looking into tubeless. I've been running tubeless for about 10 years now. Properly setup, they are a much more comfortable ride and are typically lower rolling resistance than most standard clinchers. Added benefit of a little extra puncture protection with sealant at the expense of a little trickier initial setup. There are a lot of options for tubeless tires these days, shouldn't be that hard to find something good in a 28C. I unfortunately can't help with that as my current favorites for wet are only available in 23 and 25c [Panaracer RaceA EVO3].

since you have disc brakes, you can go in for a wider tire and a smaller rim (and accept there bay be some BB drop as a result),

such as 650B ...with expensive supple tires... you give up puncture resistance..

the Schwalbe with puncture resistant bands sacrifice some of that ride quality with its heavy tread.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus would be decent but idk if they're going to tolerate sharp objects as you'd like.
ruined two in a year to roofing nails. I swear the wheels are magnetized!
