I'm not averse to riding in cold weather but it's harder to get motivated plus the road salt can be a problem. I started skiing ~4 years ago, it's a nice complement to cycling. Skiing has been a fun challenge to get to level 5. Got a couple of bumps & strains along the way, I figure you probably have enough skill to avoid those beginner things.

So all you depressed folks, I've just got to make it worse. ;) High of 54, no clouds, negligible winds, zero chance of precipitation. Commuting to work is going to be a joy.

74 and sun for my 64 miles on Friday, just about the same for Saturday's 25 mile trail ride. |

Put down 35 miles today, would've gone longer but the trail wasn't quite plowed far enough. Oh well the toes were cold when I got back. Interestingly (ironically?) talked to two cyclists today, one on this trail with a 650b tourer on the tail end of a 40+ mile ride, another back in town I see on Strava often. Most sociable I've been for awhile :lol: Good ol Midwest, it will be 50°F on Monday, was 45°F and no snow last Thursday.

Nothing to be depressed about here. Riding tomorrow, high 40 low 19f. Aiming for abut 60 miles. For salt all one needs is good fenders and a mud flap that almost touches the ground. No big deal.

I think this thread should be closed to anyone living where the temperature is over 50 degrees through March :-) ... I was feeling good about my Saturday ride in the upper 30s and strong headwinds :-(

The salt is the deal breaker for me. We had a warm spell last Winter which ate away at the snow and some rains came and washed away the salt. Then we had crazy cold arctic winds. I did 18 miles in weather that started out at 12f and then got to 8f half way through. I made one or two stops for hot beverages and glove warmers. If I had better gear I would have suffered a bit less on that ride, but it definitely beat riding through slush and salt.
I need to get an aluminum frame beater bike that I won't feel so bad about using out there. Winter lethargy can be an issue. I don't ski and I am not interested in it so that makes my options a little more limited. It's nice to have a separate winter bike--alu frame might help but I find the main problem is salt stripping chain lube. Beater or nice bike, one will have to clean & lube chain after ride with a lot of road salt spray. I'd like to try a Gates belt S/S even though some folks report belts don't always work perfectly in snow. |

When I was in my twenties and early thirties, skiing was my favorite sport ... just loved it. Married someone from the Philippines so skiing isn't so big there :) ... so, my skiing became more occasional.

That said, I really like riding in all seasons, even winter.So my near perfect weather would present the best of all seasons, without the extremes, and I already live here. Today we will be getting either 3-6" or 6-12" of snow. We live right on the line of the two forecasts. Oh, and 40 mph winds. This really, really sucks.

Local forecast was 1 to 3 inches. NWS Winter Storm Warning says 4-8 inches. Current conditions according to Weather Underground is a little over 3 inches....and it's still snowing.

I went out today anyway as most of the road was dry and more snow expected tomorrow. First time out this year on the road bike and a blamy 5C at that :)
