Question about chainrings between single and multi speed bikes
I'm currently searching for a crank for my bike. My cheap china pedal came out of the arm on my crank. I think it uses a weak insert into the crank, which strips out easily. I read other users have the same issue with this crank.
I'm going to upgrade the crank, but I'm unsure how to do it. I have a square taper on the crank. 46T on the front, and a 7 speed shimano gear set on the back.
I found a crank that other people say fits, but it's for a single speed bike. People suggest that it may not shift smoothly. Others say they have the 7 speed, and it shifts the same regardless. This crank is called:Pure Fix 44T Fixie Crankset for Fixed Gear Bike
It's on Amazon for $44. It's for fixed gear bikes but can sort of work on multi gear bikes (or whatever you call them).
My question to you: If I wanted to swap out the front crank, and buy a different chain ring, how do I know what to look for? Is that what the difference is between 1/8 and 3/32 chain rings?
I'm guessing the 3/32 allows the chain to move around if it needs to, so the chain at the rear of the bike can slide onto the different shimano gears?
Is there a visible difference I should be looking for?
And finally, for the price, should I approach the front crank this way? Or are there better price avenues for getting a new crank with a certain chain ring?
Super thanks!

Chainrings for the 1/8" chain are thicker than the ones for the 3/32" chain. The narrower chain will not fit properly on the thicker chainring. Unless you know the specs, be careful what you buy. You might want to buy locally and get the shop to figure it out.
