I think everyone should come take a ride in portugal. Tons of gravel, very hilly and the best thing is you will most likely be the only one on the road!

During my seven weeks in Andalucía I cam within sight of the Portuguese border at Barrahcos. Thought about riding across and then coming back into Spain just so I could say I had ridden in Portugal but figured the border guards wouldn't appreciate that.

Not if everyone goes to ride there.

Northwest Arkansas (Fayetteville, Bentonville, Rogers). Unbelievable wilderness trails and world-class urban bike infrastructure. No crowds.
For gravel, the area around Lawrence, Kansas is amazing. And Lawrence is a VERY cool town. Again, no crowds.

I find this thread interesting because while I ride road and MTB, it has never really occurred to me to travel to another part of the country to go road riding,

I've ridden in Montana and California, and I suppose those are pretty good destinations if you want to limit yourself to the USA.
France and Spain are orders of magnitude better in terms of available routes, scenery, food, and driver courtesy. Plus Spain is cheap!
That said, I'll be riding in Hawaii in about a month so and expect to enjoy it.

Where Would You Go.?? Bike Vacation
Replies to such requests for travel suggestions are often heavy on exotic locations or grand mountain ranges. My suggestions as a former touring cyclist, including a cross country ride, are more mundane, but IMO more practicable, with pleasant cycling in my travels.
I posted two to this thread, “Suggestions for next epic ride”:
I skied the New England states for many years with the dream of skiing the American west before I die. I got it done in 2007 and 2010. 200….So now, I dream of biking the American west. And guess what, Utah and Tahoe kinda top the list.
So much to consider when planning for a bike trip.
In this thread post up where you would like to bike in the USA. Post up any tips, states, regions, maps, ideas and more. Lets hear where you've biked on vacation or where you'd like to bike, on vacation, with biking being the sole purpose of the trip. …I think you get the picture. Have at it...

Personally. I'm very happy cycling in Metro Boston, and have posted an informal Cycling Guide to Metro Boston that would make a nice hub and spoke tour of nine days (and is easily accessible from Washington, DC).
It may seem parochial, but I think the cycling around here is great. One can be in scenic countryside within about one hour from downtown, while passing through an interesting, compact urban and suburban scene. Furthermore you can extend your range with a convenient Commuter Rail that allows fully-assembled bikes during off-peak hours. In Spring through Fall it’s a temperate climate.
Besides the cycling, Boston is such a popular tourist destination that there will always be something interesting to do off the bike…culture, nightlife, sports and so forth

When I first read the title of this thread, I too thought of larger-than-life tours such as a cross-country ride. It seems incongruous to do an epic ride in just nine days, and such an attempt at some of the rides suggested seems pretty stressful to me at least.
FWIW, after decades I still have fond memories of my earliest cycle touring in my home state of Michigan. Tourism is, I believe Michigan’s second largest industry, and it’s largely a rural / forested state with a lengthy shoreline, an extensive road system, and numerous towns and facilities, including campgrounds, spaced at convenient cycling distances.
IMO, an excellent, though perhaps mundane getaway. Just sayin’…FWIW (even as a cross-country cyclist).
BTW, over the years I have responded to several of these threads with open-ended requests for travel destinations. One thing they have in common is that the OP never informs us of the final destination, much less how was the trip, even when requested to do so.

Since I went on about the mountain biking in Tahoe, Moab, and Crested Butte, here are a few pics of one ride from each. Not very good ones from Tahoe, despite having spent so much time there. It was 2004-2006, and I did not have a camera on my phone yet.
Rim Trail in Tahoe
:
Whole Enchilada at Moab: (an epic ride that links together many trails)
Climbing Burro Pass:
Castle Valley along the Porcupine Rim Trail:
Somewhere along Porcupine Rim:
401 Trail in Crested Butte (not the most interesting trail, but amazing scenery):

Glad to know it's still that way. It was pretty darn cheap when I toured Andalucía for 7 weeks back in 2000. Even though I stayed indoors and ate out*more than I thought I would, I still spent a lot less than I had budgeted. One of my favorite parts was picking up some ham, goat cheese and bread and stopping along the side of some empty road with a beautiful view and making sandwiches.
The night I stayed in the small town of Ardales I went out to eat at one of the few places in town. I saw rabbit on the menu and asked if they actually had it. They did, so I ordered it. Turned out to be*an entire half of a small-ish*rabbit grilled with onion sauce and roasted potatoes. Thought I had died and gone to food heaven. I had first ordered wine. The waiter put an entire liter bottle on my table and told me I would pay for how much I drank. Of course, I ended up drinking the entire thing.
This evening I'll try to post some photos from the two weeks I spent at a cycling "camp" in Veneto, Italy back in 2013.

I have lived a bicycling dream in CO. I go almost every summer. It often happens that I am so overwhelmed by my surroundings that I get goosebumps.

Thanks. Believe it or not, shortly after I took that shot and started climbing again, I heard a vehicle behind me. Turned out to be an old timer slowly coming up the road in his truck. Fortunately, just up ahead there was a place for me to pull over. He had an old dog in the front passenger seat, and he waved as he passed. Gibbons Pass is a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde road. The west slope (pictured) is narrow, steep, rocky in places and not well maintained by the U.S.F.S. The east slope is wide and has a mostly hard packed surface. The west slope is only a 9 mile climb. The paved alternative (U.S. 93 and MT 43 to Lost Trail and Chief Joseph Passes) requires at least 4 miles more of climbing. I've done both now. Did the paved option in 2016 (also in 2000 and 2011). I wanted to do Gibbons again that year but it had been raining pretty good from the previous afternoon through that morning, so I skipped it and instead got sleeted on for a bit on the paved roads.

Yep, that one sure does. Here is another view:
The first time I saw it was mountain biking the 401 loop, but I was in the back of a pickup. About a mile up the road from the parking lot, a pickup pulled up and asked us if we wanted a lift to the top of the dirt road. Before I could even think about it, by buddy had already thrown his bike in the bed and said "hell yes!".
When my wife and I came to CB a few years later, we took a drive around a dirt/gravel road loop that goes by there and stopped there for a while. I would like to go back and ride the dirt roads through the mountains there:

At some point I'd like to find a really nice 'rails to trails' conversion, and pedal it really slow with the wife.
