Ever so Easy,

OK. so when you go to the bike shop to test ride that , new fancy bike ,
bring your favorite pedals, and if clipless, your shoes,
to have them put on the bike you will be buying.

Now go back to the job you should be doing, but are not,
and are posting here, instead.

This is too funny. I just bought two sets of pedals for used bikes I bought recently. Used bikes -- where the fk are the pedals? Didn't they come with pedals? Oh, whatever, a quirk of the "cycling world" I guess.

Why wouldn't they? The last time I went bike shopping, I looked at a Specialized and a Trek. The Specialized demo model came with some cheap pedals already on it, so I just used those. At the Trek shop, they noticed I had SPD shoes on, so they quickly took the demo bike in the back and stuck some SPD pedals on it for me to test-ride with. Wouldn't this be standard procedure for these shops, to just either put on some cheap pedals if you want to test-ride, or to put on some others to fit your shoes if they happen to have them handy?

Or if you have SPD dual sided pedals... just like underwear you can ride them for two days on one side, flip them over and get two days out of the other side.

Almost a week between washing...

Probably depends on the shop. Wouldn't surprise me that higher-end shops would simply nix the pedals and likely the saddles as well, knowing a good number of people would go test-riding with their own, where having a couple suitable items in stock (but not mounted) would suffice.

I know a couple of people who go shopping for new bikes at certain shops that carry higher-end bikes, and they do bring their own pedals and saddles. Easily installed, it's a better way to know how it'll fit while avoiding the saddle- and pedal-induced differences that might impact a decision.

That said, most folks don't fall into that category. At the average LGS, I can't say that I've seen many floor-model bikes without pedals and saddles.

Even with my own meager new-bike shopping experience, I've always had the saddle changed to something more suitable, before doing a test-ride.

But perhaps more shops are smelling the coffee, so to speak.

I take two pair when I got out on tour for 1-2 weeks. They usually get washed once during that time. But you have to remember that I'm not wearing them much of the day, only after the day's ride is done.

Good point on bringing your own shoes and pedals, for me spending $2k is a big deal, so I'd probably be ready for a bike fitment as well.

When I went to visit a few weeks later I built it up for him. So it happens. It came with pedals, by the way, and the guy I bought it for immediately swapped them out for something else along with the saddle.

I am not sure what LBS you go to but my LBS is awesome we just got 30% off a 2019 carbon Ultegra bike. We have been shopping there for years and they treat us very well.

Bikes could come with 'meat-on-a-stick' pedals- like corn dogs.

Then when you got home & put on the real ones, you could eat them.

"I've got a beef: pedals"!

Highway robbery.
So, buy a bike with a motor to get pedals. You wont regret the motor and enjoy the comp pedals.
