I'd hope your security guards would notice if someone starts chopping bikes off of the rack with an angle grinder. Of course, one trick is to look like one belongs.

Leaving your bike for 8 hours a day is also different than occasionally stopping at a grocery store for 15 minutes. As is leaving it anywhere outside overnight.

If you're mainly commuting to and from work, I'd ask the security guards if they would be offended if you leave a lock attached to the bike rack. That way you aren't lugging 20 pounds of lock back and forth every day. The spare lock & chain may come in handy.
+1. I commute in Philly and tour in rural places. It's all situational. Use a Kryptonite and thick cable through the rear wheel to lock up outside my ivory tower. Hundreds of people walk by the bike every couple of minutes. Not worried that someone is going to grind off my lock in broad daylight with that amount of foot traffic and the chance of a cop walking or riding by at any second.

If I am camping in a rural campground 1 mile down a gravel road from nearest highway I probably won't use my pretty minor combo cable lock. Even did a week long tour without a lock. If I am in a town that seems sketchy and I need to do something like shop for groceries, I will see if I can bring the bike inside and then use the lock. I will also lock up if I am camping somewhere with relatively easy public access, like a municipal park.

In more than 30 years of locking up bikes outside, the only place I have ever had a bike stolen was from inside my house, while I was home and awake.

If I am camping and have a lock, I lock to a tent pole. Not the most secure, but I hope that I'll notice someone messing with my tent.

I found a really cheap lightweight combo cable lock that I have in the bottom of my pack for low risk emergencies, and it will probably go camping with me.
