U of M bike theft

My daughter was going to U of M and wanted to take her good bike with her. I strongly advised her against it. She was too small to carry her bike up to the second floor, so had to lock it up outside. I advised her to purchase a bb bike for school. She listened to me. The bb bike lasted about 6 months before it was ripped off.

I'm thinking some targeting was going on. I had parked that bike, in that spot, for 3 years. And a different cheaper bike there for 2 years (give or take) before that. Which is why I felt pretty safe. My bike wasn't parked on the street, or in view of the street. I was parked in a secured, low traffic staircase in my building that was only accessible to residents.

So not only was this gate open, they had to know that there were bikes there to target. Even with the gate open, the bikes are not visible from the street.

Bummer

Locked up bikes outside just aren't safe. If needed put a couple of hooks in the ceiling somewhere out of the way. CL and the local paper is a good place to start looking for your old bike but maybe you can find a new project there too. eBay can help find a new steed too.

With a little disassembly I have taken this twice on a train here in Thailand. Once was 'First Class' which surprisingly was a little more difficult to find a stowage area than the second class initial trip. It worked. The bike in it's present state could be easily stored in a closet or behind a bedroom door without much interference at all. To make this more like a folding bike & quicker & easier to pack I will be installing a folding handlebar stem & removable pedals. Then as far as I can tell with the front wheel removed it shouldn't be very much bigger than a folded bike.
That looks great. I use my Dahon D7 as a mini-velo. I have a large milkcrate on the back rack so it no longer functions as a folder, though I do fold down the handlebar when parked against the wall. Did you buy it in Asia? Or is it available in the US?

Can't remember if this was mentioned already (read this over a couple days during slow times at work... lol), but did you walk around outside and look for cameras? Doorbell cameras are pretty popular these days, maybe someone caught something. Post it on your local Nextdoor.com group, you never know...

Hope you get lucky! Found my stolen bike after 6-months. A highly unusual bad frisbee throw landed right next to my poorly spraypainted mountain bike. Thank you God for blowing it over there... lol

After curating it over time its not replaceable so all you can do is upgrade somehow, to trick yourself into being thankful for the loss.

We don't have a camera. I live in a 20 unit apartment building in a denser area (my street is full of similar buildings). There are 4 floors. Basically there are standard sized buildings with similar layouts. They typically have about 10-12 feet between them. Mine has a tall wooden fence between us and the next one, and we have a secure gate. They have a secure gate and it functions as an alley. There is also a secondary staircase leads to the alley. So I parked on the 3rd floor of the secondary alley. Other bikes with on the ground floor, underneath the stairs. The contents of the alley are not visible from the street or sidewalk. They are semi-visible from the neighboring building if someone is looking out their window and is high enough to see over the fence. So definitely really targeted.

I've had my bike about 4 years. I probably ordered most of the stuff online and have a pretty good list available. But some stuff went up in price. Like the little accessories I got. Which is really weird. Some went up 30-40% in price. Not sure what I will do in replacement items.

Sorry to hear about your load. It sucks that there are people in the world that do this kind of thing.

I live in a small apartment and we have a bike room. I don't take any risks anymore and they my bike into my place. A nit of a hassle but better then get your stuff stolen. And bikes look cool as decoration
