Forum decorum

Is it me or has there been a general breakdown
in decorum as of late?
we have name calling, replies to posts
that start out either slamming the original question
or intimating that everyone who posted has
no clue what they are talking about, or are
on drugs.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not whinging
about the answers, or crying to the moderators,
I'm just wondering if we as a community really
need the personal attacks.
One of the things I really like about BF is
the lack of personal attacks etc. I'd hate to
see it break down into something like
rec.bicycles(pick your group).

I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary, lately. Sure, there are always going to be some people who don't mind putting other people down. But, here it seems that they leave mighty quickly. We must be so intimidating...

I haven't noticed an excess of it, but I'm selective about what I choose to open and don't see the majority of posts.

If you do see this in any post, click on the [report] link at the bottom of that post, and let us mods know about it. If it goes against the community guidelines (https://www.bikeforums.net/misc.php?s...q&page=1#about), we will take care of it. As you can see, the #1 guideline deals with harrassment. I have already banned 3 or 4 members for just that.

This is definately the nicer, friendlier forum I have become a member of. Most others involve condescending crap attitudes half the time. A few rotten apples is inevitable, but as a whole this is a very welcoming community

Shut up, Moron! I've seen nothing of the sort, its all in that mentally-deficient "brain" of yours, if you can call that a brain, after all the pickling its received. Next time you type something this stupid, dont stop drinking. It'll do the world a favour having one less clueless, drugged-out moron poaching our air.

Stuff like that, you mean? Nope, cant say I've seen any, but I agree, personal attacks are out of order over something like a difference of opinion.

For what it's worth, I think I let my anger get the better of me in the Lance Armstrong doping thread. Apologies all around. My back gets up when I see people I respect called "ignorant."

To tell the truth, I find it a bit embarassing. Sorry.

Just want to chime in as a fairly new member here, IMHO this forum and it's membership are one class act.

Whoa- I haven't seen anything much, and as one of the most irrational, emotional people most people have ever known, I'm the first to react rather badly to other people. I haven't seen hardly anything, and I think we all know each other here well enough not to go there with each other. Even when some people seem to get a little heated, it still seems to end well. I say if you see something, do what Joe says and contact him asap. I came over to this site because the people here are just so great. I can't ever see myself leaving it or not being part of it.

My 2 cents....

No, no ... it's all of us new folk bringing the general community down. Yeah, that's it.

I haven't read anything too bad here. No major offenses, at least.

I have been guilty of going to far in that area in the past. I probably will be again. However, I try to avoid name calling and personal flaming. If I post something offensive, feel free to let me know and I'll do something about it.

Specifically to Velocipedio: I don't think you need to apologize. Your counterpart in that argument hit below the belt first. In my judgment, you simply defended yourself and a couple of other members of the forum.

I would point out, however, that you may have let yourself be egged into a battle. I am an expert in being egged on--I fall for it all the time. The best retort is often silence.

Nevertheless, it is magnanimous of you to apologize for your part in it. That is precisely the kind of spirit we need around here.

Here's to the continuation of a friendly, helpful forum!

Cheers,
Jamie

I have seen a couple of instances of members making inflamatory statements, either without thinking, or with the intention of causing friction. However, on the whole, most members are pretty tolerant towards other points of view.

I've seen some opinions expressed that I consider to be absolute rubbish. I choose not to let them bother me. I know that some of my opinions would be considered strange to some members.

I think it goes back to LittleBigMan's thread some time back about using words that build people up

To be honest as far as bike forums go this is the most mature. As maturity directly relates to this I belong to 4 other bike forums and never post due to the children that hang out there. The info is still good just the posting sucks.

Iotek,

I find it very ironic that you complain about "Forum Decorum"
Have you read your own reply to the "Is Lance on drugs" thread? - How does that reply fit with your definition of "slamming the original question" You come out fists in the air and refer to my rethorical question as bull*****.....
Maybe you should spend less time thinking about the thread, as you stated, and spend more time reading it....I did not accuse LA. I viewed it neccesary seeing the current state of world cycling, to bring up this rethorical question in the racing forum. If my thread had read "Lance is on drugs" your reply might have been more justified.
We all have different views and opinions, I respect that. Please guys, read your threads correctly before making emotional replies that totally misses the point.

I, too, have noticed more of it. But I think it's most common among new members who are used to the p!ssing contests prevalent in some other forums. Seems like they usually "catch on" before long.

there was a site, I think the site is Road cycling, at yahoo group, boy, the website members I think are all warriors, and this one was disbanded or the Yahoo, just erase them, from the face of the earth?
And the best thing a members can do is self censorship. if its not good to hear or read, don't post it

Poululla,
You come out fists in the air and refer to my rethorical question as bull*****.....
I think you've misread what I wrote in the
Is Lance Armstrong on drugs...? thread.
What I said was
'And please, don't hand me the bull**** line that I'm naive and turn a blind eye towards LA.'
which quite a different thing.
I wasn't slamming you, nor your post, but more the climate
of innuendo and suspicion without proof.
one other thing, the moniker is Lotek not Iotek.

Marty

By far this is one of the better forums. Compared to some of the others this forum has very few users putting others down. It seems that there is a good mix of riders here that are from diff. disiplines of cycling and most of them try to help each other out. As stated in another reply, most of the users bashing others tend to not hang around here for very long.

Or some usenet groups. Most of the users are okay, but there are some real trolls and jerks who wouldn't last here. There are a couple who post TDF stage results with the winners in the header. I mentioned this and started a whole s***storm. EVeryone hates the guy who does it but he keeps doing it, so now I don't even check any of those groups until after I've watched each day's stage. I'm so glad people here are civilized!
