FWIW, I have had low-hanging branches smack my helmets over the years including a branch that fell on me and I have never had cosmetic damage. My guess is that this hit was enough to compromise the helmet's integrity, even if it is undetectable by a casual visual and tactile inspection.

Not about price
I didn't pay much for this helmet .... weird thing I had a decent one quite a few years ago and in the days I was earning a good income that "disappeared" ... this was just a cheap one from the local Tesco's I think.
I may go up one level from this and would like one with removable padding as I'm sure on the really hot days salt accumulates in the padding from when you sweat and can contribute to making your eyes more sore than they'd otherwise be on those scorching days if you can't remove and wash the padding from time to time.
I'm also in the camp of not spending a fortune on it as livedarklions mentioned you're then in the bracket being reluctant to replace it after a bang .... especially if it happened within a week or two of buying it and even the cheapest ones have to conform to a level of safety testing.

Replace it. Check to see if the manufacturer has a crash replacement policy. I know Bell does, and I was able to replace my crashed helmet at a substantial discount.
