When I ride with the girlfriend, I let her lead, or I ride next to her, and when she is in her middle 39 ring I am usually in my 53 working on strength vs. aerobic spinning. I at least feel tired by the end of the ride if I use a 53 on the hills around here, and she feels accomplished having ridden some distance at a 14-16mph pace.
