You would probably be OK getting a walkmart bike if you're just riding on the street and don't go on very long rides but the frames are pretty crap, usually spongy and may break after a while so you'd be better off getting a used bike over a walkmart bike. Definitely don't get one that has suspension of any kind it's going to break for sure. But to be fair the lower end bikes you would get in a bike shop are pretty crap too they have cheap wheels and cheap frame that is not worth much and forgettable mediocre components. So I wouldn't recommend you go that route either unless you are willing to spend a couple thousand and already know exactly what gear you want that would be helpful for you. If you get a cheaper bike store bike you will eventually realize there are things you don't like and that everything you have is overall mediocre and could stand replacing. If you get a used bike cheap at least you can get a good steel frame, then you can either spend money upgrading it as you find things you don't like or as they break, or once you have used it a long time and know just what you want in a bike you can just get a new quality bike that costs a few thousand and has everything you want.

My very first bike was a Huffy. I got it used for 7.50 at Goodwill. I had just started riding with a group and I worked twice as hard as everyone else to get up hills with that sucker. It was geared way to high for the hills, seatpost was stuck-luckily at not a bad for me height. My friend at a bike shop took pity on me and got it to be a little bit better ride but there was no hope. And after he let me borrow on of his good bikes and riding it-which made riding a pleasure instead of a chore I was hooked.
I found a decent Specialized on Craigslist for a 165 bucks. It was beat to hell but a sweet ride compared to the Huffy. I gave the Huffy away.
Quality counts. You cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.
