1917 Icycle

Just saw this on the local PBS station..interesting.

The photo is from a race on the Milwaukee River at the 1917 Milwaukee Winter Carnival.

A video below adds some color to the story..

That kinda looks like fun. I'd assume they have some kind of spikes or something on the wheel for traction.

The video explains it. They had wooden wheels with some thin-square U bar stock with serrated edges screwed to the wheels. Serrated edges to the ice.
