Rhode Gear Cycle Shuttle Plus?

I have an ole Rhode Gear Cycle Shuttle Plus that I am still using. It is old but works well. One thing has been driving me crazy for a while now. It has (had) something on one of the support arns that says "grip shift" on it. It looks like a handlebar grip. I have never figured out its purpose, nor is it mentioned in the instructions. Does anyone know what it is supposed to do, other than taking up room where one of my bikes could be positioned?

If you bought the rack used I'd say the PO put it there for cushioning. If you bought it new, who knows? Photo?

Must have been added by a previous owner. Here is the newer of two that I own. The earlier model did not have a cradle for the bike frame. It's the best rack I ever came across. Too bad Bell stopped making them when they bought out the company.

I am the only owner. I bought it new. Mine holds three bikes, too. That looks different than mine. My rubber bike supports have no yellow parts in them.

The mystery deepens. We need a photo!
