Caddyshack

I can't tell you how many times I've watched Caddyshack, and never noticed until this past viewing (last week) that in the opening scene, when Danny rides his bike to the club, he dismounts by swinging his leg over the handlebars . I've never seen anyone dismount this way. I know if I tried it, I'd end up in the ER

Anyone here ever try this?

My son’s old college buddy mounted and dismounted that way all the time. He said bars are much lower than the saddle and easier. Only to be 20 again with that flexibility 🤗

I wouldn't be able to do it either but that is cool. I didn't realize that either but I guess it is another excuse to watch Caddyshack again. However when you do it you could say you're alright and that nobody should worry about you

HAHAHAHAHA

He just never got any respect, it is just so sad. The poor man was in so many movies and T.V. shows and was on Johnny Carson and Ed Sullivan's show so many times and just got no respect, no respect at all.

Loved that movie. Rodney Dangerfield was great as always. That was pretty cool to see swinging your feet over the handlebars. Never seen it again, but did Kevin Bacon ever do that? He was pretty amazing with a bicycle.

I prefer to do that. When I pick up my leg over the top tube, sometimes I catch my heel on it. That leads to a fall. Once I did that on a sidewalk and hit my head on something. Six staples at the urgent care in Brockport, NY on a tour on the Erie Canal Towpath.

Us guys in the New Haven Cycling Club in the mid-1960s perfected the technique of dismounting by kicking the left pedal forward at the top of the pedaling circle while simultaneously lifting off the saddle, swinging the right foot back, and finally grabbing the saddle as the bike rolled away forward. A bit tricky with TA Jacques Anquetil nail-on cleats on a slick surface. Haven't thought of that, much less tried it, in at least 50 years.

Probably easy for Danny at around 5'10" and riding a 52cm frame.

The actress who plays Maggie is the same one who plays the Food King cashier that Otter invites to the toga party in Animal House.

He dismounts with the left leg first.... I'm not even sure I am coordinated enough to do that.

Hilarious thread. I've noticed this scene for years and even tried to do this dismount myself.

It's a lot easier to pull off if your stem is slammed super low.

Bikes: Road and mountain tandems, single bikes too.

Been dismounting that way for many, many years.
Been riding tandems for long time. Best, easiest, safest way to get on and off road tandem. Due to force of habit I also use same technique on single bikes. No real benefit there though.

I do not use this technique on the mountain tandem. Bars are just too wide. You would FDGM

Big fan of Caddyshack but never noticed that before.

I actually had no idea until maybe 5 or 6 years ago. And the way I realized it was a total fluke. I was looking up something on IMDB and somehow made the connection.

I have a place in my heart for Animal House. During the 2007 edition of Cycle Oregon we spent a night just outside Cottage Grove, and there were shuttles into town. Cottage Grove is where the homecoming parade scenes were filmed. If you closed your eyes and turned back the clock in your mind you could really see it. In fact, I took a photo of an old sign for a restaurant. When I watched the film again later I realized that you can see that very sign for a split second. It as still there after all those decades.
