Yeah that's the standard line but "on demand" didn't come on so fast at the kind of numbers we're talking about and the NBA commissioner probably wouldn't agree either.

Yeah, it wasn't like the entire NBA season got disrupted last year and people's switchover to streaming services accelerated last year for any reason, amirite?
COVID accelerated a lot of trends in terms of how people use broadband, this was just one of them.
And I've never been a basketball watcher, but I did find the watching sports televised from empty venues somewhat uncomfortable. It just felt a bit post-apocalyptic and hard to sit through.
This thread is obviously going to get locked if we keep focused on this garbage "too political" explanation for the decline of NBCSN.

NBCSN doesn't carry the NBA, anyway. So is it the political hotbeds of NASCAR, Indy racing, Premier League Soccer, or the NHL that's dragging down its ratings?

When I tried to renew my NBCSN account a month ago I was taken to a page announcing their new Peacock network. Well, ok, but why not just continue NBCSN I thought. Anyway, Peacock so far is pretty good. If they dissolve Peacock then, yeah, not sure how I'm going to watch the TDF Live.

I think the larger significance of this is the fact that NBC is Comcast, and this appears to be a retreat from cable tv and packages into a strategy to push people into Comcast's streaming service Peacock.
Cable sports channels have been in decline as cable providers are hemorrhaging subscribers.
I also think the prolonged period of no live events during the COVID shutdown also may have caused some people to break their sports viewing habits, a trend which started before the pandemic, but just may have gotten sped up a bit.
I suspect parking some major sports events on USA network may be a stopgap measure to save USA. TV drama production pretty much shut down last year, and now there's a shortage of new programming to fill slots.

Last nite, at the end of the final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs (TB 1, MTL 0), Kenny Albert announced on-air that NBC would no longer be hosting the NHL.
The Tour d'France coverage is better this year on NBCSN, IMO, than it was several years ago when I balked at the price increase for NBC Sports Gold.
There are commercials on NBCSN, of course (which they taper off when the race nears the finish line), but Phil Liggett and Bob Roll (calling the race remotely), Adam Blythe out riding the course on the "moto," Steve Porino on-site at the finish line or wherever, and Christian Vande Velde, Chris Horner and Paul Burmeister analyzing from the studio, are going to be missed.
I can only hope someone (USA Network?) can come up with something comparable next year.

Just get a sub to an IPTV service and a Firestick. Mine costs me 15 a month for 4 feeds. I get about 3,000 channels. I pay by the month. No contracts. It is cheaper if you pay for 3-6 or 12 month sub but I am fine with 15 a month. I have had it since last summer. With a VPN, I can get Eurosport 1 and 2 plus about anything else you can think of. I can get feeds from all over the world so it has worked pretty good for the last 10 months for me. Little to no buffering either if you have a 35+mb Wi-Fi connection. And yes, I can stream 4k if it is available.

In the winter they cover a lot of snooker since there is little cycling races. I would say, cycling, road racing like formula 1 and snooker are the big 3. Ohh, if you are into skiing and any winter sports, they cover most of those too when the weather gets cold. Eurosport is just that. Pretty similar to ESPN here in the States only it covers the sports in Europe.
If cycling is your main thing, then a sub to GCN probably would be best but if you are also interested in other Euro sports, then Eurosport is good for cycling and then all the other Euro sports. Soccer or football is a whole another matter as there are a ton of channels covering soccer.

I get Peacock plus (premium?) for free with comcast, so the tour has been pretty good so far. No ads. Have been watching it on a roku. The ads on any of the shows they have on there will make you want to fork over the $5 a month for the no ad version.

The Peacock software is far, far superior to the NBCSG software. The old o\ne wouldn't even keep your place if your tab closed for any reason.
What I miss is full coverage of the Diamond League.

Depending upon the IPTV service you are using or going to use, you then only have to find Eurosport. There are usually Eurosport 1 and 2. Cycling is not on 100% of the time so you would have to check the schedule but it is on a lot in the spring, summer and fall. Eurosport covers just about every race in Europe that I know of. In the spring when there are the one day races during the week, they usually show them all. They also show replays throughout the day if you are working as most of us are doing the day.
In the winter they cover a lot of snooker since there is little cycling races. I would say, cycling, road racing like formula 1 and snooker are the big 3.
