That's why I want them loud, I'd rather have my ears hurt for a few seconds than not hear the speeding vehicle heading my way.

Hi, indeed! I was looking into a pair similar. Kind of nice to have in any noisy environment. They have really come down in price over the years it seems.

I too have a sensitivity to certain sounds. Sirens fall in that category. Luckily where I ride it doesn’t happen very often.

Ambulances are loud, but where I live the fire trucks are insanely loud. I mean ear shattering loud when they come up behind me and sound the horn. I usually stick my finger in my ear and turn my non-plugged ear forward until the fire truck passes. Luckily this doesn't happen often.

I don't remember emergency vehicles being this loud but after observing some motorists completely ignore emergency vehicles, maybe that's why the increased the loudness of the sirens and horns.

Read it again. I didn't say anything about "letting people die." Or are you just "trolling"?

And yes, it is bizarre how sensitive people are when somebody expresses an opinion that is really just comedy. I mean, I think that take in post 7 is simply funny.

snowflake
Is this trolling or is this just insulting? Are people still actually saying that word?

!

Post 7 very clearly implies it's wrong to make noise to save fat people with heart attacks. So now it's "simply funny"? No. If that's a joke, write better.

" Uber sensitive "=snowflake. You started that.

The only way I've found effective to prevent them from honking the ear splitting horn while coming up behind me is to make sure I'm either so far to the right that I'm irrelevant or just get off the road if that's impossible. If you pull over to the side and stop, you can plug both ears. The good news about the loud sirens is you usually have at least a couple blocks' notice that they're coming and you need to move.

Come come now Fellas.

As cyclists, we use threadlocker on our canti-bosses but let us not have it used on our thread here.

I cannot recall ever once having an ambulance nearby on a training ride although a car happens by every now and then. OP needs to move. Problem solved.

Honest questions--have you actually used those? Do they work?

It's an intriguing concept, noise cancelling only when it's actually useful.

Active in the canal noise cancellation has been around for decades. They are not cheap. They are popular with shooting instructors. They cut loud sound levels by around 25 dba while allowing you to hear conversation. I considered it for my recumbent, the wind noise is really bad on it. I have a behind the ear version for shooting sports but they are too awkward for a bike, I suspect an in the canal version might be the ticket.

That's an interesting observation. Maybe some auto insurance companies "suggested" to civic authorities they increase the SPL level of the sirens as an insurance actuary calculated over-precautionary measure to limit claims payouts in the off-chance a siren is not heard.

My original post was not about the presence of sirens on the road, because this is bound to happen in a City this size. I'm speaking of the huge increase in them over the last 18 months. No one is asking why that might be. Guess what - I did. I was riding by a firehall last week, the doors were open and all the trucks were out. Up here, the fire engines go out with an ambulance automatically (= Big $$$ for each call). A paramedic was taking the opportunity to sweep the bays. I rode up and asked him if there was a recent increase in the number of non-fire related calls (majority are like this anyways) and he said yes. He says the "guys go out and in the past they'd be back for a lunch but now they are just working through it. They come back really late.". This increase is universal it seems. The video report in the first post is from Germany. I have heard similar reports from Ireland and the UK. The main cause for these calls is an apparent massive uptick in heart attacks and strokes across all age groups.

Well on the upside, he probably didn’t have to wait too long for an ambulance.

I live in the country, so, few vehicles. I might ride in suburban areas once per week, I can't remember an ambulance.

I took a lovely trip to the trauma center in an ambulance last year. I asked the driver to please turn the siren off, "I am not going to die, I am stable, I just have a bunch of broken bones". He obliged.

The ambulance driver went into shock? Sounds like that second ambulance had three people to pick up.

I don't think everybody has to suffer in order to save the fat person's life. That's all.

"Suffer"?! It's a noise for a few seconds. BFD

What's the highest BMI someone can have before you deem them worthy of siren use?

I know you'll no doubt accuse me of being moralistic here for saying that sentiment disgusts me, but you do understand that you're basically saying that if you're fat, you deserve to just die rather than being a minor inconvenience to others. I can't think of anything more moralistic than that.
