I won't argue otherwise. Regardless, the OP has a history of overly opinionated/polemical posts. What went on in this thread is somewhat a result of that. That's on him.

There's lots of evidence that, whatever it is, it isn't working for him.

Wait - which one? I gave 3 possibilities. That means your response was....

AMBIGUOUS!!!!

(One might also argue that, given we're on the 7th page of a thread on a fairly boring topic, he's been remarkably effective.)

At trolling. Also, not a good idea (and would suggest that the clarification stuff is disingenuous).

Not even close if you have a well-designed and packed bike. Hit 48 mph coming into Ticonderoga. Was too concerned to go over 45 heading to Ennis, MT with a strong headwind. I would never attempt those speeds descending on my road bike.

Both times I had to break often to keep those speeds down. Heading to Ennis I would often stand up and use my body as an air brake. A 100 lb. bike (not including rider weight) gets up to speed quickly. Hell. I when I was more “Ute-ful” I sustained 42.5 for several miles on the flat MT Highline heading to Malta. Finally redlines too long and had to dial it back to 38.5. Big bags act like sails with a massive tailwind. But I am certain you know that and are feigning ignorance.

This is one thing.

You said he wasn't saying "Nobody can enjoy this" (which isn't ambiguous anyway).

Since there's ample evidence that some people enjoy this, no one should care about this opinion. It's a useless/pointless statement.

(I see this as saying "I have no imagination but have an absolute opinion that people should care about".)

Like I said yesterday, I'm off the bike. So I'm seriously jonesing, and this **** is keeping me entertained, so I don't mind.

Hey, could you do me a favor and stop retconning your previous replies? Thanks.

I'm not "retconning" anything. Don't be so hot to reply.

The last two bad ones I can remember being caught in were at 7,280’ and 7,900+’, respectively. The latter produced short periods of snow and ice. I could hear the ice hitting the front rack. Challenging for sure. But fist pumping when I made it through.

Safety Tip: "Retconning" is different than than "reconning".

Are there meds involved in your recovery? You've seemed a little out of character the past few days. :D

Ttom 07-05-24 06:22 PM

Take your fully loaded bike out for a nice long ride and see what you think. If your gonna be staying in hotels and eating out I'm thinking you have to much stuff there.
But ride the bike loaded then decide.

"Dude, are you on drugs?"
1) bite me. ;)

2) Last time I rode was Tuesday of last week, and I have a bike I just finished building and tuning up, that I was planning to ride on A LOT, which is now sitting in the garage. I might be a little cranky, but mostly I'm in pretty good humor. I just keep seeing members overinterpreting something and then sticking to that overinterpretation even in the face of the OPs clarifying ambiguities. Essentially
"That's not what I meant."
"Yes it is."

And it just seems like some folks need to lighten up. Go do the rides I can't.

It's called trolling.

Stopped to pan for sapphires at Gem Mountain on the way up. Left with over 16 karats, but they are all to small to do anything with. When I reached the top, I put the sign back in place. (Assume it was damaged by a tree fall or avalanche. Then I started down. Stopped briefly for a photo at the falls. I had hoped to hang out for a while. Had to skateboard through a slide just before the pavement picked up again. It was so cold that I hammered down to generate heat. I hadn't brought my winter gloves (or my best rain jacket). My hands felt like blocks of ice. I could barely work the brakes. Fortunately, it wasn't steep or technical at that point. I was mildly confused from hypothermia by the time I finally reached Hamilton. No way was I going to finish the remaining easy 18 miles I had planned. Got a motel room and, later, I big ribeye.

Then there was this, only one week into my first ever tour. Everyone was nervous about tackling the N. Cascades Highway. A little over a 30 miles climb from Colonial Creek Campground to the top of Washington Pass, with Rainy Pass first. Zero services along the way. It was very cold the next morning, and there was virtually no warmup before the steepest section. It started raining somewhere before Rainy Pass. The rain eventually turned to snow. I had to stop during the descent to warm my hands inside my pants. I was the last of 13 to make it to the campground in Winthrop.

The last two posts have me asking the same question that is this thread’s title.

MikeDeason 07-06-24 04:05 PM

They all look rather gloomy in the pic. It makes you wonder if they are thinking they should have packed this!

Maelochs 07-06-24 05:16 PM

Yeah ... I personally would rather rent a van than have the sorts of experiences which make me feel exceedingly alive, even if they are also sometimes exceedingly challenging.

Climbing a peak and seeing amazing vistas ion the other side, riding up and down hills all day, with new and more amazing scenery over ever summit and around every corner, stopping in some town which is tiny but it seems everyone is friendly ... food cooked over a fire when you are truly famished after a long day in the saddle ... testing my mettle and learning about myself, and wrapping all of this in weeks of good times with good companions ...

Even worse, sleeping warm and cozy in a good sleeping bag with no tent needed or wanted, coffee in the morning while the sky is still getting light, setting off on each day;'s adventures ... and knowing that these days are one of those blocks of time you will literally remember all your life ... realizing that these sorts of experiences are precious and rare .... realizing that you are actively Living your Live ....

Hell no. I will stay in the van and play games on my phone like a civilized person. What could possibly be better than winning Candy Crush?

Maybe if you had read the text…

The older guy in the photo was a CHiP for 30 years: Rode a Harley like in the TV series. At 60, he was the overall strongest member of the group. Rode a dusk suspension MTB. Ironically, he died many years later in a motorcycle accident.

The oldest guy in the group turned 77 in IA. After we reached Bar Harbor, he started riding home solo a few days before I did. His wife finally made him quit in CT. He had spent 2 years in a Nazi POW camp as a member of the RCAF before eventually becoming an American citizen. Lived to be 91.

I can assure you that no one wished they had had motorized transport. Doing without one was the very point of the trip. We did it. You didn’t, troll. :roflmao2:
